View Full Version : Bizarre solution to a strange DV capture problem

I am new to this. So please forgive my probably nonsensical terminology.

I ran into a very strange problem when capturing from by DV camcorder (Canon GL2). Capturing resulted in video and audio distortions every few seconds. The video distortions where strange colored blocks appearing in part of the preview image. The sound distortions where cracks and noise.

I tried various capturing programs (the one within Nero, DVIO, WinDV) all with the same result. Whether capturing in type-1 or 2 avi did not have any effect on the problem.

What was strange was that while just viewing the movie in the capturing program (Nero, or WinDV) without capturing it, there weren't any of these distortions. That led me to believe that the device I was capturing to (external Maxtor 5000DV drive) might be the culprit.

Finally, I checked the WinXP configuration settings of the external HD I use for capturing (a Maxtor 5000 series). WinXP used the drive under the 'Optimized for Performance' setting. I changed that to 'Optimized for quick removal'. Since then everything is fine. Not a single distortion capturing long videos.

Has anyone else every experienced this?

My setup
- HP nc6000 (512MB, Pentium M at 1.6GHZ)
- WinXP SP1
- Ratoc firwewire card
- Maxtor 5000DV external hd connected via firewire
- Canon GL2
