Hi guys,

I've searched several forums for anyone with a similar problem to this, with no success. I hope someone can help out. :)

Basically, I have a 700MB .avi file which I want to convert to .mpg for the purpose of putting it to VCD. However, when I try this, I get an error from Windows XP telling me that TMPEG has encountered a problem, and that it has to close. Thus, I can't get an error log from TMPEG.

Thinking that perhaps the .avi file had an error, so I ran VirtualDub & checked it for errors. Nothing was found. So I tried to re-save the .avi file using VirtualDub, but when I tried to encode this re-saved file, I also got the same error.

I also - as per suggestion at www.videohelp.com - went to Options/Enviromental Settings/VFAPI plugin, and changed the Directshow Multimedia file reader to priority 2. This didn't help either!

The strange thing is, I tried to encode 15secs worth of the video, to see if the error occurred with a much shorter portion of the video. There were no errors when I encoded this small portion of the file, which makes me think that perhaps TMPEG is having problems with the size of the original .avi.

Anyway, I'm at my wit's end...if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. :)

Thanks guys,

Brian

Just a stab in the dark... have you tried a different AVI file to see if it works... maybe you need to reinstall TMPGEnc. I might have got damaged and one tiny bit might be wrong :(

Thanks for the response. :)

The problem is that TMPEG encodes everything else, from large .vob files from DVD2AVI, to .wmv files. It even encoded a small portion of this rogue .avi file without problem.

Is TMPEG known to have problems with .avi files?

How far into the avi has it got b4 it blows up?
Are you ot of disk space?

Have you tried frameserving from virtualdub to tmpg?

According to TMPEG, to convert the entire file would take around four hours, and the program consistently encounters errors after around 20mins.

I am definitely not out of diskspace, I've got 20 gigs to play with. :)

I'm a bit of a newbie as far as VirtualDub is concerned, I only started using the program to try & rid my .avi of any errors. I did run VirtualDub & tell it to check all of the frames for errors, and there were no problems found.

What type of audio does the avi have? Tmpgenc doesn't like ac3 input.

Hi again guys,

Let me just say quickly that I don't know off-hand what audio the .avi has, I'd have to use another program to check.

Anyway, the frameserving from VirtualDub worked quite well, there were no errors & it worked first time, so thanks for that Dave. The only problem that I have is that the .mpg is a couple of frames out of audio sync, which leads me to believe that perhaps there were a few errors in the .avi's audio.

Thanks again everyone...

Or the compression codec could have been at fault.Or too high a compression ration.I always use frameserving and get no probs.
