View Full Version :
DiVx4 with NanDub: How?

Hi,
sorry to bother you with a question that has been probably posted several time before, but the message search function doesn't work...:(
I currently use GKnot/ VirtualDub (Avisynth fast recompress) to encode in DivX4.02 (1-pass or, better, 2-pass encoding). So, I don't need to use the SBC procedures of GKnot/Nandub (what is the meaning of SBC, btw?). Then, I multiplex audio (VBR mp3) with Nandub.
Since Nandub is derived by VirtualDub, I wonder if one can just compress also the video with Nandub, avoiding the usage of VirtualDub.
I tried, but I couldn't find the way to set-up the DivX4.02 codec! Is it possible?
I'd like to do it with NanDub also for its "shutdown" feature (very useful, I leave the PC running all night...:( )
TIA

well...
nandub works only with divx3.11alpha - and that's it! You cannot use it with any other divx (such as vki or 3.22). It will give you an "out of memory" error.
SBC means "Smart Bitrate Control" and it's omething similiar to
2-pass encoding in divx4 - it analyzes the video in first pass and according to the statistics gained in this stage, it distributes the bitrate in low and high-motion scenes in the second pass - saying in simple words.
Try Gknot and Nandub and compare results with the obtained with divx4 - you'll see the difference - nandub is better and makes better quality rips.
take care

I'll read the guide for the SBC procedure with Nandub and try it, but it seemed much more complex (I've seen it briefly, just because it's together with the guide for Avisynth/DivX4 in Doom9).
But, why should one use it to compress with DivX3.11alpha in two passes, when the codec has been improved and version 4.xx includes the two pass already  ?
I would appreciate a lot a Nandub version with its advanced features (VBR or AC3 audio) and the freedom to select fast recompress with DivX4 codec....:p :p :p

Well... I already have answered this...Because Nandub and divx3.11 gives you BETTER results than divx4.xx - better results means better image quality...

Also the guides here at www.doom9.net are realy easy to follow - serriously i thought going from flask mpeg to sbc encoding with nandub was gonna be hard - hell no - it's easy as pie, and the results will blow you away.
Additionally you can use vbr mp3 with nandub thanks to vob2audio.

Sorry if I am missing something here, but I had the
impression that it was in fact possible to use Nandub
and DivX4.
From the very end of:
http://www.doom9.org/divx4-main.htm
"Note that while this page talks about VirtualDub you must use
Nandub if you use another sound format than CBR MP3. Only Nandub
(and VBR MP3 VirtualDub) can properly handle VBR MP3 tracks and
formats like AC3 and Ogg/Vorbis (though I didn't describe the
latter two in the guide)."
Doom9 says to use Nandub in his DivX4 guide - but is
he only saying to use it for multiplexing and not encoding?
Nicky Pages site also implies that Nandub is just fine
to use with DivX4, since it's just a codec and can be
substituted in the typical DVD2AVI...Nandub scheme.

well... I find that very obvious... if I meant nandub can be used for the whole process then I would write so at the beginning of the guide or at least at a point where you have to load virtualdub and not at the very bottom in a step that only concerns audio muxing and splitting.
so.. nandub can be used to join divx4 video with an audio track and to split the divx4 movies but that's it.

Indeed. After more reading, I see that Nandub
gives that memory error when attempting to use
DivX4.
I would point out, then, that your guide (same
URL as I mentioned above) is slightly wrong...
I think - step 4 looks like it was just copied
from a DivX3.11/Nandub tutorial and forgot to
be changed, yah?
"Step 4: Create a pseudo AVI
Using the VFAPI Converter we're going to transform our DVD2AVI
(or TMPG if you performed IVTC) project into something that Nandub
can open."
I think "Nandub" in that last sentence should be
Virtualdub, no?
Small crap, nothing big, but then again, the small
things can trip up folks trying it for the first
time...
THANKS!

keep in mind that nandub is the same program as virtualdub (note that uncanny resemblence) only built for divx 3.11 SBC 2-pass encoding. And yes, divx 3.11 SBC gives the best possible quality you can get in a divx encode, in my opinion. The best thing that 4.12 has is its fail proof filesize/bitrate calculator, but GKnot for nandub divx 3.11 has one thats gets within 10 mb or so.
Basically, virtualdub is a multipurpose video tool while nandub is a divx 3.11 encoding tool based on virtualdub's code.

at a bitrate something like 1500+ do you really
see a difference between the two methods, or
are you talking bitrates that fit onto one CD?

Try less than a meg! .... are you using 48 kHz mp3 ??
