I'm thinking of including an md5 checksum file in the DVDs that I burn as a way to check for corruption in the files. If the text file of the md5 values is written onto the DVD with the other files (vobs, ifos, etc) will that cause any problems? Will DVD players and ripper programs just ignore the extraneous file?

It will very likely cause a problem since the files in VIDEO_TS have many internal links. If the burning program places the file anywhere but after all the other files the relative positions will shift, causing big problems.
Better to put the file in another folder or the root.
