Metadata (tag?) loss. Is file recoverable?

Here is the situation, I lost some data on a hard disk when it crashed. I had the data restored and some of the movie files (avi with a proprietary codec) no longer work. When I right click the movies and look at their properties then the summary tag I have a statement as follows: "Summary properties are unavailable for the selected source(s)."

I believe this information is called metadata and I imagine it is required for the player to properly run the file. Is there anyway I can rewrite the data so that the file can be opened again?

I have tried to open the file with: nandub, virtual dub, windows media player.

there is a tool which extracts all valid video/audio stream parts from a faulty or corrupted file but I don't remember how it's called
