I bought a Philips DVP 632 and updated it with the new firmware, provided by Philips ( version 0531) which enables the player to show external subtitles (.srt,.sub, .smi) for divx movies.
It does not work. I can not choose a subtitle. The player refuses to display subtitles.
I burnt a few dvds with a divx movie and a subtitle file (.srt) with the same name.
Does the subtitle ext. support work for anybody out there, who ownes a DVP 630/632 ?
Thank you for any help/comments.

I never got the *.sub *.idx files to work but it works with the *.srt file.
You have to be careful when you play a movie with sub-titles, first on the file index view select the subtitle file and press the subtitle button on the remote, this should give you a message on the top of the screen that the sub-title file has been selected. Then reposition the selection to the avi file. I usually wait before selecting the file until the selection has changed to the final shade before hitting the play button.
It's also easy to convert from *.sub/*.idx's to *.srt using one of the programs that comes with vosub. Also, the *.srt are much smaller and allows you to fit the files on a single cd.

Have any of you guys tried generating encodes with subtitles using Nero Recode2.
Obviously the streams will be placed in the MP4 container. And you will have to delete the AAC stream in order for the file to work with your players.
Never the less it would be interesting to see if Nero's subtitling impelementaion works on players with version 0531 firmare!
Let me know if you have any problems creating such a file?

Anyone know why it hasn't been possible for any DVD (?) to show DivX .sub/.idx subs when all of the players out there can play DVD subs fine and DivX .sub/.idx subs are merely the same pictured-based subs extracted from DVD subs stream? Is it that technically difficult for players to support .sub/.idx? Would it be supported in the near future?

Easy? I thought the only way was to use SubRip to OCR the picture-based subs into text-based and it's not easy. Perhaps you could enlighten me of what the easy program is?

The program to which dynoweb refers is called SubResynch, and it comes as part of the VobSub package. You can also find it in the Subtitle Tab of Gordian Knot. You have to go through the same OCR process as when using SubRip, although, personally, I think that SubRip is slightly better.

For all those who don't already know.
Here's are Philips' "subtitle" instructions for version 0531 of their firmware: -
