View Full Version : Jerky PowerDVD playback with ScenAid build, but ReAuthorist seems clean...

Working with "Once Upon A Time In America" R1, Disc 1 (of 2).

I just built this in Scenarist 3.0 using ScenAid v0.9.0.27. I was previewing the build in PowerDVD v4 and happened upon a scene where there was some problematic playback. I got the same result with ScenAid v1.0.0.0 PR7.

I then tried ReAuthorist v1.0.0.0 and the same scene plays cleanly in PowerDVD v4.

I haven't really seen this before and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what might cause this, or if it's just a fluke with PowerDVD.

I've uploaded <10 second DVD snippets of the two builds containing this scene. It's located here:

link (http://65.61.236.146/jfpics/OUTA_D1 Problem.exe)

I also included the two scripts (SA v1.0.0.0 PR7 and RA v1.0.0) in the package as well. It's a self-extracting archive.

Thanks...

p.s. - The actual scene time of the snippet(s) is 01:56:47:00 to
01:56:55:15.

hey J,
i previewed the .vobs in WinDVD6 and for the life of me i cannot see any skipping...
have you tried burning to a RW disc and testing it in your standalone?
i did notice that the chapter/scene times were different between the scripts, but neither of them occured at the time of the .vobs you cut.
did you encode via scenaid controlling BatchCCE?
???
so, yeah, maybe it is only a Power DVD thing?
really dont know mate
cheers

Same here.. no skipping in either clip

jel, I ran BatchCCE separately from ScenAid.

I've build this thing a half dozen times and always see this stutter where the guy in the front seat turns back to the front.

I did preview it in WinDVD 6 now, and I'm not seeing it to the degree as I did in PowerDVD. Just a very, very slight hesitation (from both clips) at this point in the scene.

It's weird. I've never seen this before. The .M2V file plays cleanly in both PowerDVD and WinDVD.

I will burn to RW and see what that looks like...

Ok, burned to an RW, plays fine in a Panasonic player. Put the disc in two different computers, and ScenAid segment is still skipping (in PowerDVD 4).

This is weird - I'm gonna do a little more testing...

Ok, I reran this build with a slightly different bitrate and no problems this time. Wish I would have saved the old build for comparison.

Now, you guys could have warned about disc 2! ;)

Stay tuned...

disc 2 ?!??! :D
never actually seen the movie, let alone know what the dvd structure is, sorry. i take it that it is complicated?

so i am assuming you raised the bitrate? what was the original encodes' (the one that skipped) bitrate versus the non-skipping one?
maybe PowerDVD was having a bad playback day, or it dislikes certain encodes? perhaps it was due to the number of similar frame types in a row causing stuttering?

either way, glad you got it sorted out.
rockin'!

Yeah, I'll have to bump an old thread for disc 2.

I did raise the bitrate, 4440kbps to a whopping 4450kbps. At first, I built a 75MB DVD containing that scene, and ran it through the process.

That played fine, so I figured "what the heck", and just reran the whole thing...
