I currently have a P2 233 oc to 333. I plan to upgrade to a Celeron 400 and oc it to 450 or 500.

My question is, should I upgrade or keep the current CPU?

if you get the celeron for nothing (or close to) then why yes upgrade. if its going to cost you anything substantial then why bother ? neither cpu is going to be exactly blistering speed. :)

Little question:

I have a SCSI U160 board (64-bit PCI) running at 32-bit mode, a 17GB U160 SCSI drive plugged on LVD channel. When I boot, Linux set it to 40MB/s. "hdpram -t" gives ~13MB/s. I also have a IDE drive plugged on EIDE PCI card, at ATA100. "hdpram -t" gives ~40MB/s. Why is SCSI slower?!?!?!??!!

what you really want to do is a real transfer test. that is copy a very big file from both the scsi and an ide on to another hd(same target for both tests) and compare the time taken. that should give you a better idea of any real speed difference.

Hum... I think my CPU is capping my HDD. P2 goes to 100% for a wget from the SCSI to the IDE. Speed is at 13MB/s. I also twaked my IDE, but no speed increase :(

Some time ago i've made a simple test of performace of old processors. I've tested the Xvid-compression speed of all of these processor. The result are actually Speed/mhz to see how fast is a "one mhz" of each of these processors.
PIII-500 - is a loder P3 processor (25micron technology) It works on 100mhz and has 512kb of cash, working at 1/2 of cpu's speed
P3-600EB - is a newer P3- It works on 133mhz bus speed, and has 256kb of cash at full speed (600mhz)
Celeron 333A - is a P-II celeron, bus speed 66mhz, has 128kb cash working at full speed
C2-266 - is a first celeron , 66mhz bus speed, It has no L2 Cash at all.

thats not good. you should be able to attach something to it. even if you just add a couple of small dots of glue at the corners for added security that would be better than nothing.

there is nothing to attach it :( I'm gonna receive 2x450 cleron soon. Gonna switch one with the 400.

Overclock them to 650mhz at 100mhz bus. By cutting B21 pin (than motherboard will think that it is a 100mhz-based cpu instead of 66).
Than you can cut another 3 pins (don't remember which) so that it will take 2.2v instead of 2.0v. This will increase it's speed up to 80-100%

there is nothing to attach it
well i did mention the glue. that is slide it all the way in the slot then pull it back out a millimetere. put a small dot of glue at the edges/corners of the slot where the adapter slides in. then when you push it back in the glue should be just inside that edge. easily seeable and easily cutable if you wanted to remove the adapter.

since you are getting the cpus and wont need the adapter anyway though it doesnt matter. :D

The new CPUs are slot1 native, but they don't seems to have "locks" like P2 have:

hmm you mean the side pieces that locked the cpu in ? i remember a freind had a slot celeron and the side pieces were detachable. you had to fit them on before putting the cpu in. maybe thats the case with them aswell.

As neither of them are good for anything but a boat anchor, I would go with the P2, being older technology, it is more likely to have a thicker metal case, and hence more weight, just the thing to stop the boat dragging the unusual anchor....:)

Doh!

I just realized my "P2 233" was in fact a P2 350 with a 100Mhz FSB :rolleyes:. Why don't they write the Mhz on those things? :devil:
