Play the video with your media player and press the "print" button on your keyboard, so you can paste the screenshot in every graphic programm you want to.
Or try VirtualDubMod (video=>snapshot)

with Media player classic you can make snapshots as well. (file --> save image)

the 'print' method may require you to load another overlay using program (like dvd2avi with a mpeg loaded) so it will use the overlay. then load your xvid in media player and hit 'print-screen' button or.. alt print-screen which will just capture the active window. you may end up with a black area where the video should be on your copy if you dont.

There are quite a few software media players that allow you to take screenshots (sadly not Windows Media Player 9/10 due to licensing issues).

I use Media Player Classic most of the time (using the same method stephanV describes). However, the "screen-shot" is saved as an bitmap file, which as you know, tend to have quite large file sizes!

There are of course many "tools" able to convert images from one format to another... my personal favourite is HyperSnap, which has its own screen capturing feature too - but it's not freeware.

Irfanview is nice and free if you want to convert your images to PNG or JPG :)

Media Player Classic will allow you to save your screenshot as a .bmp or a .jpg. There's a drop-down box in the "save" dialogue. :)
