Strange DivX 5.2 German translation

Hi guys (& girls?)!

What would you expect if a forum member asks about "bidirectional encryption" -- cryptography?

The german translation is "Bidirektionale Verschlüsselung", which is probably a dictionary-based translation from "bidirectional encoding". But unfortunately, the german word "Verschlüsselung" would be translated back to english preferably as "encryption", not as "encoding".

Imagine the expectance from reading the thread title, compared to the solution! :D

Instead, I would have recommended "Bidirektionale Encodierung" to the DivX translators.

Only found the word "Codierung" in the dictionary... :confused:

Afaik it means coding, but encoding as well !!!

"Encodierung" surely is no german word. "Kodierung" might fit - with "C" or "K".
I´d go for "Komprimierung"(compression) - it´s closer to the original meaning.

Complicated... In my opinion, there are terms which shall not be "translated by any means".

I (personally) would prefer "Enkodierung" over "Kodierung", because it emphasizes the direction towards encoded material ("Kodierung" only is a bit too undirected, in my opinion).

"Komprimierung" (compression) is just one part of the encoding process; rather a result of it. RLE, LZW, LZSS, Huffman - these are typical compression algorithms (especially for lossless ones). Quantization and motion vectors are not that typical, in my personal opinion - here "encoding" would fit better, being a more general term.

And from my experience, "encodieren" is indeed a quite usual term in our german doom9 / Gleitz board.

From a very strict point of view, even digitalization may be a first step of "encoding" (e.g. using the ASCII code to represent text is already "encoding" from that point of view)... :rolleyes:

I don´t think I would understand "Encodierung". Even if, I´d probably refuse to understand it, as I HATE this English/German mix.

Why not simply leave the original english word then? Apparently, there´s no good word in german for it - so use the original term.
