View Full Version : New W2K + DivX 5.1.1 -> Fails every time? Help!

Hi everybody!

I have the feeling I'm missing something rather basic. I've used Win98SE with DivX 5.0 for quite a while and never had a problem.

Now I've switched to W2K (due to that little box on my desk labelled 'DOOM3' ;) ), so I have a nice and clean system (was about time, too).

Installed all the latest GordianKnot with DivX 5.1.1 and - behold! The encoding fails utterly.

I tested the whole thing on a 50 second studio advertising clip, and it ran without a hitch, even if it seemed a bit slow.
Now I try in on something full-sized (directly from HD) and not only does it give me a mere 2-4 frames a second, it also regularly fails after the first pass is done - and it fails at the very end, killing VirtualDub, dropping into the OS without comment or anything in the log files.

My hardware should be sufficient: an AMD 2100+ with 1GB RAM and plenty of HD space.

Could anybody help me, please? Am I overlooking something very basic?
If this keeps on, I'll probably have to switch to Xvid on Linux...

usually a drop-out virtualdub is caused by an avisynth script crapping out.

plz post your script, or try running the encode without gKnot, or whatever to try and isolate the problem.

it's unfortunate that virtualdub is buggy in this respect - instead of giving you an error message, it'll often just disappear.

Thanks for your info!

I tried in several steps:

a) Switching to XviD: failes in the same way
b) Switcing to AutoGK: fails in the same way
c) Switching the harddrive: works perfectly ;)

Ah, hardware glitches, our pride and joy.

I'm in the process of switching my encoding to Linux where it belongs anyway. and I found that I rather like XviD - see how useful such problems can be :D
