This is basically a useless thread because I have to much spare time :) . My useless stat for the day is that going by the DVD-RB download thread at the top of this forum, since version .46 through to .57 there has been 102559 downloads of DVD-RB  ! And that's not counting the dozens of other sites that offer it for download either, so I'm sure the true number is much much higher.

If only everyone donated $1 everytime they downloaded DVD-RB, jdobbs could just about quit his day job :). I've donated $25 and have been using DVD-RB since .49, so I figure I have another 16 downloads coming to me (although that doesn't count minor versions) :) . As I said at the start, a useless thread .

yeah, but if it cost money then less ppl would use it and some bad ppl would just try to steal it (and he probably wouldn't get businesses to buy it because they would just pay someone to do dual-layer or whatever they need). Plus the drop in the number of users would hurt the development by some. I believe in supporting the developers, but I doubt that he would make enough to quit his job, and people would just turn to alternative, and in my opinion, worse ways to backup their dvds. All in all, keep up the good work with rebuilder and only turn it into a commercial product if you think you have the fanbase for it.

Wasn't suggesting that jdobbs goes commercial. Just pointing out that if all the people downloading and using his software on a regular basis were nearly as generous with donating as jdobbs and crew are with writting and supporting this software, then working as diligently on DVD-RB as he and his crew do might actually become financially feasible, rather than just doing it because they have a passion for it. Same story as 99% of all freeware apps out there really.

I'm not suggesting that you HAVE to donate in order to use DVD-RB, what I am suggesting though is if you use DVD-RB as your primary means of DVD backup, then you should show your appreciation for the huge amount of time and effort being put into it by donating a few dollars to the cause. And if you can't afford a few dollars, then you can't afford the blank DVD media you are using to backup your DVD's to.

I second that. This is only one of the sites upon which DVD-RB is available. I recently did a little browsing and there were well over 100,000 downloads of Version 0.56 alone.

As for whether more or less people would use it if it cost anything... well every day I watch people spend $1.50 to buy water -- a substance that covers over 70% of the earth's surface. I don't think a couple bucks thrown in my direction for several hundred hours work is too much to ask.

Plus the drop in the number of users would hurt the development by some. Some kind of pretzel logic there. I've never seen an increase in income hurt development. A small amount of "something" is always greater than a large amount of "nothing."

Alright sorry. I do believe people should support you 100%; the best they can. And I do believe that if people would give you about half the cost of a stack of media, then you would be making some money off of the the program. I was thinking at the time that brashquido was hinting that you should make people pay to use dvdrb, and I wasn't sure how well it would work at the current time. Please continue your work on rebuilder. I hope that anyone who has the time to read this thread also has the time to give just a few dollars to the project.

I am using DVD_RB sinde V0.36 and fint it useful and fun. That is why I donated 25$ (for the fun of it). Jdobbs should go comercial when the product is ready and I see all this forum as a help to him. I've made few minor contributions myself, pointing small things, so tons of other people did, some small, some big, but the workload goes to Jdobbs. And he should make money of it. There are other programs there making money for much less performance.
Whatever I use in the backup chain, I donated (except CCE which I bought) - DVD Decrypter, DVD_RB.

If there are more than 100 K downloads for one version he should get rich. I'd hate to see what happened to Kalashnikov (russian guy who inwented AK-47). If he'd gotten 1$ for each gun built since 1947, he'd be 4 times richer than Bil Gates. And on top of that, DVD-RB doesn't kill people!

Just my 2c.
