i make some videos, and i wonder, for you, which is the best codec, that gives the best quality, and small size?

i normally use xvid 3000 kbps

3000 kpbs is not small file size... 300 kbps is, and what is quality anyway? :)

unfortunately, we're not allowed to ask such questions as some idiots always feel the need to turn such discussions into a flame war.

i make counter strike movies :)

300 kbps just gives some poor quality u know?

:)

i just want to know what codecs ppl use

wmv9 is also good, but it takes 2 much space

for CS, I would use Real Video 10 :)
I've done movies at 350 kbit/s (incl audio) and it look pretty fine :)

I think most people will agree that it's best on CG stuff (I didn't say it's the best codec in general! don't flame me :D )

Read forum rules #12...

Anyway, since counterstrike movies are hard to compress, and since there are a lot of sharp edges, I would say to use RV10 or any of the H264 codecs ( though they are not really stable yet ). But perhaps someone who already encoded such kind of movies will give better advice.

3000 Kbps is a good bitrate for 720p encoding ... !!!

since i am mostly intersested in low bitrate stuff, im doubting now between realvideo and wmv. havent really chosen yet... perhaps i never will :)

I would go RealVideo, less microsoft :D

exactly my thought :D
You've also got less problems with the playback for other OS :D

less microsoft... but more real :p

i dont really care about that... microsoft bashing is lame. if i find WMV9 to be best, i will use that. anyway, they both go into MKV so i am happy (its nice to be able to choose your own audio compression method too :) )

You've also got less problems with the playback for other OS
since im virtualy the only one watching my stuff, i dont have to worry about interoperatebility. everything i encode is 100% interoperable with my own system :p

(come to think about it, i know no one who owns a mac and only a few people with linux...)

unless you are into piracy, you really shoudlnt worry about such things too much :p
