Right now i use a regualr NEC 8x DVD +/- RW and use DVD Shrink and Nero to make backups, it works great but I was interested in making a purchase of a Dual Layer burner becuase I get both the burner and media cheap from my work. I was wondering what software you can use to make backups with dual layer DVD's to use their max potential. Will DVD Shrink automaticly adjust compression to less then non dual layered since a dual layer bruner is being used or will other software be needed and can Nero burn dual layered DVD's one the Video and Audio folders are made with DVD Shrink?

Why would you still want to use DVD Shrink when you have a dual layer burner? You can copy a dual layer DVD 1:1, so there's no need to compress.
Nero6 can burn dual layer DVD's, but I've heard of problems here and there, and if you check out the Nero Update side and the Log sheets, than that's not a big surprise :-) But I think you can get good results now.
Yeah, good point on DVD shrink:-) Are there any other good programs out there for burning other then Nero that might work better with Dual Layered?

Simply use DVD Decrypter to rip your DVD then DVD Decrypter to burn the resulting ISO.

I don't know for dual layers but for single layer I had a lot of coasters with nero (altough it does a great job with CDs). Using DVD Decrypter I never wasted a single DVD. So to answer your question in my opinion DVD Decrypter is a better burning program for DVDs than Nero or anything else I tried on windows.

If you have a NEC 2500 (the 8x model), then there's no need to buy a new burner. You can just flash yours to a 2510, which has dual layer support.
It'll take a few more months before dual layer discs become cheap enough to actually want to use though.

Really? I do have the 2500, where can I get information on flashing it to a 2510?

These two drives are in fact the same drive afaik: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=99246
Here you can find the firmware upDate to upGrade your drive (at your own risk of course):

I Ran the update and it said it was updating from 1.06 to 1.07, i restarted and windows aid it foudn new hardware and installed a 2500A, all my software says its still a 2500A but the update software sees it was updated to 1.07. Did I do something wrong or skip a step or will my drive be okay?

It seems that some people are having trouble burning the layer break using DVD Decrypter. Nero is the safest way to go. Also, DL DVDs hold a bit less than a commercial DL DVD, so sometimes it might be worth trying to compress with Shrink (so it will fit in all cases).

You didn't do anything wrong, if you look in Nero, you should see it as being DL capable...

I flashed my 2500A with 1.07b5 a couple of days ago :)
Seems to work great, except that I haven't bought any DL disks yet. I can buy them, but one DL disk costs as much as a pack of five TDK +/-Rs.
@neversummer187: yes, it's still a 2500A :)
