Subtitles off synch (Scenarist problem ?)

Hi.

I am trying to backup SIGNS dvd and in IFO Edit, when I hit "GET VTS Sectors", during processing VTS_01_0.IFO (VTS_01 was the only stream re-encoded and re-authored), I get the following errors :

There’s something wrong. The file position does not match the offset for table : ID_VTSM_C_ADT

I hit OK and then get the following :

There’s something wrong. The file position does not match the offset for table : ID_VTSM_VOBU_ADMAP

Again OK and then :

There’s something wrong. The file position does not match the offset for table : ID_VTS_C_ADT

Hitting OK and :

There’s something wrong. The file position does not match the offset for table : ID_VTS_VOBU_ADMAP

And after hitting OK again :

There’s something wrong. The IFO Endsector does not match the file size.

And after that, the same error messages appear again for 1 more time. After that, IFOEdit flawlessly processes the remaining IFOs.

I ignored those and burnt the DVD, just to find out that the subtitles were off synch by 2 seconds.

I have found out that the errors in IFOEdit come up because of what IFO Update does to VTS_01_0.IFO. If I do not run IFO Update there are no errors in IFO Edit GET VTS Sectors, however the burnt DVD doesn’t play well (only half of the movie is played).

1) Can anyone help me fix this problem ? What is going wrong ? If it hadn’t been for the subtitles off-synch, I wouldn’t bother, however now it’s annoying.

2) I opened Scenarist .scn file and noticed that the subtitle streams in track editor are indeed positioned a bit too early. Is there anyway I can make them appear 2-3 second later ? I tried clicking & dragging on the subtitle stream in Track Editor, however nothing happens. I can only click and drag each subpicture alone, but of course I can’t do this for every single subpicture in the stream. So, is there anyway to “move” the whole subtitle stream 2 seconds later ?

3) Will moving the subtitle stream in Scenarist fix the problem ?

I once had this same IFOEdit problem and they adviced me to use BatchUpdateIFO instead of IFOUpdate. And that fixed my problem.

I tried using BatchIFOUpdate as you suggested and skipped the IFOEdit part at the end (as far as I understood, when using BatchIFOUpdate you don’t need to use IFOEdit afterwards), and although no warnings or errors appeared, the subs still appear 2 seconds to earlier than they should.

So I have come to the conclusion that the subs being off synch is not caused by the errors in IFOEdit. Thus I have changed the thread title and I would really appreciate some help on why the off-synch may have occurred and what I can do to fix it… As I said, the subtitle streams are also 2-3 seconds off in Scenarist Track Editor, however I don’t know how to make the entire substream move 2 seconds ahead…

you are correct in your assumption that your subs synch issue is not a result of updating your ifos.
unfortunately i do not know of anyway to easily correct your subs times. you can not simply select a substream and move it along the timeline. you have to change the times for each subtitle in the .sst file and re-import.
you could possibly write a batch file to change the times? (bit beyond me i'm afraid)

or you could install the latest build of scenaid, and re-rip your subs via DIF4U and check that the times in the .sst file are different/correct to what you have now.

or if this does not help or you already have used the latest vsrip/vsconv to rip the subs, you could try using subrip which has a built in function where you can manually adjust the times for the whole stream (this, of course, is reliant on your sub de-synch being consistent throughout the stream).
you will then have to re-import your substreams and check the colours etc as they will not be right.

Well if Get VTS Sectors is selected in BatchIFOUpdate then you don't have to use IFOEdit, otherwise do it with IFOEdit

To change subs that are out by a FIXED amount throughout the movie is possible and its not too bad...

Load the ac3 into a sound editor as you need to get down to 0.05/0.1 secs (I used goldwave, trial version available) and match the first (usable) speech to a particular sub, check what the .sst file says the sub is starting at, make a note of the time difference (make sure you are in seconds and not reading frame numbers!).

You need to edit the .sst file using subtitle workshop (again, freeware or trial available), but before you can load the .sst into subtitle workshop you need to remove all the '000's from the line numbers which you will need a dos style text editor to do (it can 'swipe' columns, making it quicker than deleting all those zeros from hundreds of subs). I use TSe Pro (trial verson available), just hold down ctrl to swipe all the zeros in the columns and hit the delete button on the keyboard, save the file. Make a copy of the original .sst header information, because subtitle workshop dosent save a scenarist compatible header (even tho it has a flavour to do so!!).

Load the .sst into subtitle workshop and select edit from pulldown menu, then timings, then adjust delay, change the delay (set it to global so it changes all the subs, think its on by default), oh make sure you are in seconds and not frames (theres a toggle in top left somewhere), make sure it changed all the subs the right way and save the file, copy the orignal header over the one subtitle workshop created and you're good to go.

Last thing, scenarist knows you have changed the .sst file (dont ask me how), so turn off sub processing in scenaid and import manually.

Good luck, I've had to do this a few times and its worked perectly every time and with some practice it takes less than 2 mins, oh, and its thought there is a 'hidden' cell at the start of a VTS set that dosent get processed and is to blame for the consistant synch error.

Thought I might as well add (too late) that I have an excel spreadsheet I created a while back that adjusts every timecode in an idx by an inputted ms. Obviously this flows down to the ssts :)

Of course there's probably no advantage to using this over subtitle workshop =)
