View Full Version : High quality ASF to XVID with perm sub: is it the optimal way ?

Dear all,

I have some ASF/WMV high quality files with SAMI subtitles (they all are entirely legal because my friend, don't like DIVX, XVID, etc ... at all :(, has created them from his DVD colletions). Now I want to convert to XVID format to play on my standalone DVD player. () My goal is the quality (that is also the reason why I choose XVID, not other codec like DIVX, etc...). File size, processing time ... are not important.

Please help me to verify whether my solution was good and if not, please suggest a better way. Thank you very much.

- First: convert. I used TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress to convert my clips from ASF to XVID. Because orignal bitrate in ASF format is 1628 Kbps, I choose this value in 2nd-XVID-settings hoping that will keep the quality as good as possible. (The other parameters are choose as Doom9' Guides with quality' orientation). (Is it optimum ?)

- Second: add permanent subtiles. Unfortunately, I can't do the second job with the first at the same time because TMPGEnc Xpress doesn't support SAMI format! Obviously I can not convert my subtitles to Subrip, etc... because it will not work with my ASF file.(Maybe someone'll ask me why I didn't use TMPGEnc 2.5 supporting not only Subrip but also SAMI, well because it doesn't support Koepi's Xvid 1.0.1, (at least with me)).

So I must use Subtiles Workshop convert my subtitles from SAMI to SRT and after that, use VirtualDub with its Textsub filter to add permanent subtitles. That means it is needed to re-encode my XVID files and hence, reduce its quality [:(].

Thank you for your patience :) and now, PLEASE give me another better solution for my problem.

Thanks in advance.

directly rip your friends DVDs to XVID!

PS: well i have my doubts concerning the legality of your project! just because your friend owns the DVDs doesn't give you the right of making copies (unless they're for your friend - which i doubt)

Ok your doubt is reasonable. But the cause is I'm Vietnam and my friend is currently US. He ripped his DVDs into Windows Video 9 because follow him, this is a good codec and when Sigma release 8620L chipset (http://www.sigmadesigns.com/products/em8620Lseries.htm), I can enjoy these clips not only on PC, but on home theatre cinema (maybe the new generation of Kiss DVD player). I think he was right.

However, it seems we must wait for a couples of months before DVD players supporting WMV9 become popular. I want to play these clips on my current DiVX DVD player WITHOUT bother him by request him re-rip the DVDs and re-transfer the big files to me. I can, as you know, simply use P2P programs such as Bit Torrent to download easily tons of movies in XVID format from Suprnova. But I think my way is better and, obvioisly, more legal, isn't it ?

That's why I post my problem here and honestly hope to receive the valuable guides from you guys.

well for one thing, TMPGenc is for encoding MPEG-1, not MPEG-4. You're going to have to use Avisynth with VirtualDub or something along those lines if you want to use XviD.
