avi -> svcd

just a quick simple question, its been a long time since I've had to deal with .avi files etc so bare with me. me and a couple buddies want to watch .avi movie on my dvd player but I'm not sure if .avi works on my dvd player but I know (s)vcd does so I want to convert it. How long would it take to convert two approx 700mB cd's to svcd using the guides etc.
