View Full Version : Edges Gone in Analog Capture

Whenever I capture analog video, whether from a cable broadcast or from a VCR, the DVD's I produce have edges missing. I am using an ATI All-in-Wonder 9700 Pro. I capture, cut, encode, and burn. That burned DVD will play like normal on a computer, but some of the picture is missing on each side when I play it on a TV. It seems that this is a capture problem. If anyone could tell me how to fix this, I would be incredibly grateful.

There is nothing to fix. This is called overscan and always happens. All televisions cut off around 10 percent around the edges. But as you say, it plays fine on the computer. This is because computers do not have overscan. There is nothing wrong, this is how televisions were designed.

If it was a capture problem, the edges would also be missing when you play the burned dvd on your computer. Most people don't realize there is an overscan if they don't capture video.

is this why we should capture at a smaller frame size then add black borders on the sides ?

these borders will not be visible because of overscan.

What are the disadvantages of such a procedure ?

If done incorrect: wrong Aspect Ratio

If done with correct Aspect Ratio: you'll loose much detail, especially with interlaced video

(It is mostly intended, if you loose image information due to overscan! So there is almost no need for reducing framesize)
