View Full Version : Why does VirtualDub & Bsplayer-MplayerC crashes with XviD1.01?

When I try to watch my Xvid 1.01 clips in VirtualDub frame by frame I get a lot of crashes. This doesn't happen when I stay to key frames. This also happens when I seek frames in players (I use Bsplayer or Media Player Classic latest versions). Using or not Quartel Pel & Global Motin Compensation does not affect this. I am using B-frames no Packed Bitstream, with the default settings.
Does anybody knows if this is normal or if I can do anything to avoid it? It gets kind of annoying sometimes...
Anyway, excellent job from the XviD team, DivX is just history for me...

Which VirtualDub version are you using? What exact settings for XviD are you using? What is the error message (if any) that you get? What is being used to decode xvid encodes (ffdshow / xvid / divx..)? And does this happen to only one ('xvid') file or to all XviD encodes you generate? It may be that this file is corrupt (either corrupted because of hdd or badly encoded).

I had similar situation, and I updated practically every software I had, but in the end it was updating ffdshow that did the trick. I was using release from May, 2003.
Check here for newer builds.(august 27,2004 is the latest atm)

Well, the settings I use are:
Profile :Unrestricted
QuantType:MPEG
B-VOPS 2/1.5/1.00
2-Pass Settings:Default
Zone Options:
Begin With Keyframe
Chroma Optimizer
Advanced Options:
MSP:6
VHQ:1
Use Chroma Motion
Quants: I 2/6,P 2/6,B 2/31
Trellis Quantization
Everything Else Default.
I use XviD codec for decoding, I don;t like ffdshow (although I used to) and the build is latest Koepi's 1.0.1
Yes it happens to all the files I encoded with 1.0.1
I use the latest VDubMod and the player as I said before is MplayerC latest or BsPlayer also latest. It happens to both.
I've also tried Vdub latest (P4 compilation), the same here! Unfortunately I am not at my working PC so I don;t have the exact error message that Vdub produced, I will try to post it ASAP!
NOTE1: Even with Quartel Pixel and G M C enabled or disabled, the same problem remains.
NOTE2: Last 2 encodes I did them with Closed GOV and it seemed the problem dissappeared, althought I didn't have the time to test it more.
Thanks from those who replied to my post, I hope that some moderators will join this thread too.

always encode with closed GOV. Otherwise you run the risk of your GOPs not ending in I frames, making motion compensated frames lives' difficult ;)
Always.
