Here is the hystoric:

I had Shrink 3.1.4 whish was working fine. Never crashed, never freeze... nothing. I found out that Shrink 3.2 was out so i installed it. Than came those problem. Whenever i open a disc and shrink analyse-it, i get this "programming error - exeption blah blah blah".

So i managed to get back to 3.1 but the problem is still the same. I Uninstalled shrink, defrag everything, re-installed my DVD writer... nothing works. DMA trick is O.K.. everything seems fine... It seems like 3.2 installed something somewhere that would be the cause.

Even more! I have a second win XP installed on another Partition just for safe. I installed shrink 3.1.4 and everything is just fine. So i can't blame my hardware...

I also saw another thread somewhere that had the same problem. Never been solved... HELP ME SHRINK!!!

Welcome to the forums, Yuzzy. :)

I'd suggest you try unchecking "Enable burning with Nero" in the "Edit >> Preferences >> File I/O" menu. ;)

That doesn't do it. The problem seems way before burning. And that's what i'de like to fix. Shrink 3.1 work well when not replaced by a younger version. I still can shrink with my safe system (the other partition) but what i'de like is to fix the problem on my usual system.

I don't want to walk around the problem by using decrypter or other (aside) applications. I could do it before and want to find out what shrink 3.2 did to my system. In fact, i'm ready to format and reinstall all my Windows system if that's what it take. But i thought i'de drop by to see if anyone fixed that problem...

BTW cool forum... Lots of useful info... great reference... Even for a broadcast Video Editor...

Yuzzy, I know the problem happens well before the burning process.
All I'm saying is that it's usually caused by the Nero SDK used in DVD Shrink. ;)

If this didn't work I'm affraid I don't have anything else to suggest.
Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable than I will come to your help. :)

It worked... (I didn't get that error message) only, the movie is blocky and freez every 10 or 20 seconds. Made the test twice with two different movies.

So Nero would really have to do with this... in some part...

A few suggestions:

- Use better media.
- Burn at a lower speed.
- Defragment your hard-drive(s).
- Stop any unnecessary process that might be running (including internet connection, firewall, anti-virus, Windows Indexing service,...).

On my system the System DirectX Video Renderer freezes the screen after a few clicks! I have to use OVERLAY MIXER instaed in

DVD Shrink Preferences - Preview - DirectX Video Renderer

Same problem with Nero Recode 2 but there is no way to switch.

I did everything writen...

It has to do with the installation of shrink 3.2. Cuz even uninstalling 3.2 and re-installing 3.1 doesn't work. Again, it's no hardware problem (I use the same media as i use on the other partition.) I have nothing running but the clock and it all began after installing 3.2. That's why i'de like to find the source...

Ok, to recapitulate:

Running v3.2, you used to get a "Programming error - exception occured" message when analysing.
After having unchecked "Enable burning with Nero", you were able to use DVD Shrink without error message.
However, your backups are now blocky and freeze every 10 or 20 seconds.

If I got this right, I need to ask you one question:
Are your backups freezing, blocky, once burned on DVD-R, or do they show the same faults when played from your hard-drive (using your software player)?

When played on my hard drive the file is blocky (Some green lines here and there and some blocks every 20 sec or so). I can even see those artefact when i analyse the file in Shrink...

But i'm running 3.1 (whish was the one who worked well before all that story)

Are these the files that have been generated by DVD Shrink, or the original files.
If the latter, what did you use to rip the files from the original DVD?

I do everything in shrink... when i said analysing, I meant that once ripped on the HD i opened shrink again and created a new re-authored project and opened the files i just ripped with shrink. Just like i would do with a new project..

I do that sometimes just to check the files.

I did copy a DVD that was under 4GB (The Movie Thirteen) whish doesn't require any compressions and it did thos artefact too.

2 things you can try.

1. rip to hd using dvddecrypter. it is the best at this.

2. when analysing the dvd disable(untick) that preview.

Yaaa... well.... before getting there i rather re-install all my windows system. I know Shrink can work well on my computer. It did before installing 3.2 so...

Well... as suspected, it only got better when i re-installed my windows XP all over again...

Let's close this thread and live with the mystery...
