View Full Version : DVDx 2.3: what's new?

This release, made after 18 months of inactivity, really makes me curious. The homepage here at Doom9 does not give details, nor the main project page seems to be updated. DVDx is the program that I used for my first DVD backup... I don't use it anymore, but I'm still sincerely devoted to it :)
...and I don't even know where to post this thread, I did a search and threads about DVDx are spread across no less than 6-7 different forums here... so please move it where you think it's more appropriate ;)
So, what's new? Who made the changes? Is the development restarted or is this the last revision we'll ever see? Every hint/info would be appreciated.
cheers :)

I'd like to know more about the development, I know that dragongodz had some changes underway, but his last post about that was in Sept. 2003...
DVDx is still a useful proggie but IIRC it lacks YV12 support for encoding AVIs... and also I have no idea how to make it process AVS input, if even possible... look what a n00b I am

all the listed changes are made by me plus a few contributions (the thanks section of the readme list such people).
i havent spoken to Jean Luc in over a year so i dont know what he is up to. i have emailed him etc but no reply so i can only assume he has moved on to other things.
so with me changing isp i thought i may aswell release 2.3 which fixes some important bugs etc since development is going to be much slower with just me. i do have a big list of things i would like to do with DVDx but again by myself its going to take quite some time.
as you may have noticed i have also done work on Rejig and QuEnc aswell, add in real life and time is very limited.

Hi dragongodz, thanks for your reply. It's good to know that DVDx is not dead... it's still an excellent tool, especially for n00bs. Very well designed, simple but with all the options you need. I still use it to identify the audio tracks and the Sound normalizer is useful as well.
And given all the troubles I have with the buggy VDub(Mod) I still hope to return to DVDx encoding someday... so please don't give up, even if you have limited time to work on it ;)
cheers :)

Hi,
the official DVDx home page is http/www.labdv.com/dvdx and is free access (labDV has most part restricted to VIP members.
Last time I met Jean-Luc (we live in same city), more a less a year ago, he was moving to a new flat and doing painting and more works; so no time for coding.
Since he hasn't done any code for DVDx for a while I guess he may have met a girl :D or he's working on a new project. He told me about another DV project he's in mind since a very long time so he may come back with it... one day.
Nevertheless, dragongodz is maintaining DVDx and I'm more involved technically (so far I was pushing features), but it may take a while before I really add some code to DVDx.
I founded labDV.com in year 2001 to bring support to DV community (I was spending lot of time helping newbies at VCDhelp at that time) and then, due to popularity, the huge traffic made me move to some business. To lern more about labDV, you can read the latest newsletter: http://www.labdv.com/public/newsletter/0408/newsletter-en.htm (roadmap section).
Anyway, labDV has now stable revenues and support (more is always welcome) so I can plan more contribution in Open Source software. First the full web site code (PHP/MySQL) will be published as Open Source (Artistic license) in October at www.phpcodex.net and then I'll be personnaly involved in DV coding, mostly for Open Source contribution.
You can find me in Doom9 forums as well as DVDx support forum (moderated by dragogodz http://www.labdv.com/forum/viewforum.php?forum=16 ).
Cheers,
Jim
