View Full Version : Transcoded, analog video flickers badly

I captured a home movie from an 8mm camera and created a DVD. However, no matter what I try the video flickers terribly. Best I can compare it to is a video game running at 12fps. I've successfully recorded from my digital camercorder, but this analog camcorder is causing me fits! The AVI looks perfect on my computer after being recorded, filtered and cut. The VOB also looks perfect after it's been transcoded, but the DVD looks horrible on my TV.

Ideas??

Here's my specs:
- Sony Handycam 8
- ATI All-In-Wonder 9800
- Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.0E Ghz
- 1Gb RAM
- 300Gb hard drive (SATA RAID)

Here's my settings/process:
- Captured using VideoDub (sync version)
- Filetered and cut using VideoDub (regular version)
with filters: null transform, resize to 720x480,
denoise and ViewFields.
- Transcoded to NTCS VOB with Adobe Encore DVD (tried
both Interlaced and Progressive settings)
- Written to DVD using Nero Express 6.2

Thanks!
Jeff

P.S.: The DVD looks fine when played back on my computer, too. It's only when it plays on the TV that it flickers.

Use a de-flicker filter!

There are at least 3 I know of, Donald Graft, MSU, and some other one(s?).

The HTML description of what they do is interesting & enlightening.

Change the field order setting when you encode the mpeg. Could also be a problem because you resized. What did you resize from.

Bottom line, (if it looks ok on pc but not on a tv) the interlace is messed up.

I was using resize to drop 10 pixels from bottom and letterbox.

That was the problem. I had selected the "Interlaced" box on the resize filter. I refiltered the video without checking the "Interlaced" box and all is well.

Thanks!!
