View Full Version : Why does my 12X DVD Rom reader only read at about 4X top speed?

I own an NEC ND-2510A DVD dual layer burner, that is rated at 12X DVD ROM read speed. However, everytime I pop a DVD in the drive to rip, the top read speed is never more than about 4.5X. I have DMA enabled, yet this is as fast as it can read. My previous drives all acted the same way too. In fact, usually when the ripping process begins, the read speed is about 1.9X and it slowly climbs to about 4.5X, but half way through the ripping process it goes back to 1.9X and slowly increases the speed to 4.5X again. Bottom line: It takes about 30 minutes to rip a DVD 9 disc. Is this how long it should take a 12X DVD reader to rip a DVD 9 disc to the hard drive? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Carlos.

Its diference between onelayer and duallayer disc speeding.
Test onelayer DVD.

Maybe your DVD Drive is blocked at 4x for DVD Video Disk.
Mine was blocked at 2x. Try a new (cracked) firmware. If you find one for your Drive.

Get the hacked firmware here.

You need to flash in DOS.Rip lock, bitseting, and more media compatibility and faster burns.

Wow. flashing in DOS becomes a problem because I don't have a floppy drive in my system. Is there any work around for this problem? Any info would sure be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, but it's been a pretty frustrating road for me to try and create a CD boot disc so far. The problem is, I don't have the orignal Windows XP installation CD, nor do I have a boot floppy. Wouldn't it be alot easier if the firmware flash program could simply work in XP? Does anyone know if the next version of this firmware will be made to work for the 2510A in windows XP? It's so frustrating...I wish I had a floppy drive, I'm sure it would be so much easier :(

Take your time and read this a few times, if your not happy working in DOS maybe you could ask a friend to do it?
Don't think a Windows flash will be released.

Thanks for your help. I tried both links, but they don't appear to work. Would you know of a mirror site that may have the same files and info? I appreciate the help.

some of the drives limit video ripping to a slow speed to slow down copying of dvd's for example. I have had excellent luck with a liteon combo cdrw/dvdrom drive for ripping, they are like 40 bucks and they rip at 12.5x and sometimes higher.
