greetings,
I have captured video to mpeg-2 file, but I can't seem to figure out how to make a svcd out of it, without reencoding it.. is it possible, and if so then how?
thank you

This depends on what resolution it is captured at.
Resolution for SVCD is 480x480 for NTSC, or 480x576 for PAL.
Many players also support CVD which is 352x480/576.
But unless it is captured at one of these resolutions you are scuppered. You will have to re-encode or (preferably) re-capture at the correct resolution.
As for making an SVCD from it, try VCDEasy from doom9 downloads section.

768 x 576 isn't valid for DVD either. 768 is a VERY strange resolution. How did that happen? Valid resolutions for DVD are:
720 x 576 (PAL)
704 x 576 (PAL)
720 x 480 (NTSC)
704 x 480 (NTSC)
352 x 576 (PAL)
352 x 288 (PAL)
352 x 480 (NTSC)
352 x 240 (NTSC)
http://www.dvdrhelp.com has some information on SVCD and DVD formats that might be of help to you.

768x576 is 4:3 AR, no? I just captured to that resolution a live basketball game..
Is it the reason why GK seems to mess up with resolutions when I select 4:3 AR ratio for this video, it doesn't allow me to select 384x288 res for some reason..
But why is it so - 720x576 isn't 4:3?

resolution is not in any way related to AR
a regular PAL TV has a resolution of 720x576 but a AR of 4:3.
why? because a TV uses non-square pixels. the shape of the "pixels" (a TV doesnt really have pixels) causes the picture to be shown in 4:3.

you can make an xsvcd at that resolution. if you have a forgiving dvd player it will play it. just keep in mind that other standalones may have a hard time with it

You might want to use ReStream (http://shh.sysh.de/) to put your MPEG2 to SVCD-like MPEG2 without reencoding.
