Hello,

I wanted to make a backup of a original dvd. The original dvd has 12 subtitle streams, 6 for letterbox and 6 for wide. In IfoEdit you can see, that the 12 subtitle streams are grouped to 6 streams, where each stream has two Ids.

I tried to rebuild this dvd in maestro, with the German and English audio streams and subtitle streams. My settings in Maestro were:
Aspect ratio for the video: 16:9 Letterbox
Subtitle 1: DE (Properties: Wide-1, Leterbox-2)
Subtitle 2: DE (Properties: Wide-1, Leterbox-2)
Subtitle 3: ENG (Properties: Wide-3, Leterbox-4)
Subtitle 4: ENG (Properties: Wide-3, Leterbox-4)

I seems, that Maestro doesn’t work correct, because it generates 4 subtitle streams instead of the expected 2, and everything looks totally chaotic.

The result of Maestro looks so (in IfoEdit):
Subpicture 1: Deutsch (2-bit rle) (ID: 0x21, 0x20)
Subpicture 2: Deutsch (2-bit rle) (ID: 0x20, 0x21)
Subpicture 3: Deutsch (2-bit rle) (ID: 0x22, 0x20)
Subpicture 4: Deutsch (2-bit rle) (ID: 0x20, 0x22)

And in Subrip it looks so:
00 Deutsch 0, letterbox wide letterbox wide
01 Deutsch 0, wide letterbox
02 Deutsch 2, wide letterbox

I think, based on the original, the result should look so (in IfoEdit):
Subpicture 1: Deutsch (2-bit rle) (ID: 0x21, 0x20)
Subpicture 2: English (2-bit rle) (ID: 0x23, 0x22)

Can anyone tell me what I’m making wrong? I would me really happy for every help.

Sonja

PS: Sorry for my bad English. I haven't used it for years...

Hi,

I came across this thread because I was having a similar problem. In case anyone else is wondering, I found the answer in the manual. It's hard to explain, but I'll try.

The "number" that a subtitle stream is mapped to is SEPARATE from the track number in Maestro! (<-read that again!) What this means is that when you look at the subtitle numbers in a player, you are seeing the MAPPED numbers, not the TRACK numbers from Maestro.

The actual subtitle track number has no bearing on how it is mapped !!!!! If you understand this it all makes sense!!

In the "Track Properties" dialog you are setting this track's MAPPED number. There can be different MAPPED numbers for Letterbox or Widescreen. This means that when a DVD is played back in Widescreen, it will show only the Widescreen MAPPED tracks. The same is true for Letterboxed.

So, in your example, you would set it like this:

Subtitle 1: DE (Properties: Wide-1, Letterbox-None)
Subtitle 2: DE (Properties: Wide-None, Letterbox-1)
Subtitle 3: ENG (Properties: Wide-2, Letterbox-None)
Subtitle 4: ENG (Properties: Wide-None, Letterbox-2)

Subtitle 1 is mapped to NUMBER 1 in Widescreen mode, subtitle 3 is MAPPED to NUMBER 2 in Widescreen mode. Both are turned off in Letterbox mode.
Subtitle 2 and 4 are mapped to NUMBER 1 and 2 for Letterboxed mode. Both are turned off in Widescreen mode.

I hope this made sense. Anyway, I am now authoring DVD's with "double" tracks, just like the originals. :D:D

It probably was solved already, but I couldn't find the answer on the English forum. So I posted a reply to the question even though it was asked about 2 months ago.
Other people who have the same problem may find this question and answer helpful. I found this page by searching so I'm sure others will too.
