How come i can't get any subtitle programs to open .sub files ripped using DVD Decrypter in demux mode. I get this error with every subtitle program i use.
The File "E:\DR_NO\VTS_03_1 - Subtitle - English - Normal Captions - [SP 01~W] - Delay 156519ms.SUB" is a bad subtitle or an unsupported format.
I used that movie as an example but no matter what subtitle i try to open i get the same error.
Is there something wrong with DVD Dycrypter in demux mode thats causing this problem or is there something i'm missing in all the threads i have been reading dealing with converting .sub files.
Someone out there has to be using DVD Dycrypter in demux mode that should be able to help me out.

maybe i'm going about this the wrong way.. All i want to do is add the in movie subtitles into scenarist while authoring that sometimes arn't present in the video stream.. So maybe i need to ask the question "how do i convert .sub files i get from DVD Dycrypter in demux mode into something i can iMport into scenarist during the author process" The funny part is i learned every process before this on my own and i can't seem to find anything that teaches me how to do this.

In brief, the answer is: don't. I wouldn't know of any tool which can handle demuxed sub files.
Use subrip or vobsub to rip your subs and/or convert them to text.

thx for your reply what i don't understand is why arn't there any tools to handle this operation. Seems to me this should be the easiest way to do it. Demux it off the bat, convert it, import into scenarist, set the delay times (which u get from demuxing), and off u go.. Now i have to jump through hoops in order to import subtitles onto my backups..
Didn't mean to come off harsh but i don't see why anyone hasn't written a program to handle this.
After having said that i'm still a bit confused on what to do. During the ripping process i grab the subtitles in "direct stream copy" mode (leaving them in the .vob file) and then rip the subtitle using ?? and then i have to convert to .sst ??
I have a very good handle on the backup process up to this point. Subtitles are giving me a hell of a time. I mean fisrt off i'd like to know of a way to tell if i need the subtitles in my back up in the first place. Meaning is the subtitle needed to understand the movie at time where someone is speaking a different language (i.e. star wars when the aliens talk) or are they language captions (which i don't even want in the movie). I have found most movies contain such subtitles built into the video stream yet certain ones appear under the video stream.
I guess i'm looking for some advice in general from anyone.
1. Whats the best way to tell if the subtitles are indeed necessary to understand certain parts of the movie?
2. If so how should i rip them?
3. What should i use to pull the subtitle out of what i ripped.
4. And finally what should i use to convert them to .sst so i can import them into scenarist.
Sorry for the long post but i've asked these questions before and no one ever seems to help me. And yes i have searched these forms for answers and not come up with awhole lot. THX

Pal, U must choose either text based subtitles or image based ones.
If scenarist needs ssa subttitles (I don't know the proggy, never used it) så U must rip from the vobs (after decrypting with dvddecrypter into ur HD) with, for instance Subrip.
Her U may choose text or image based subs.
If U wanna add new subs then U must use some of the guides there are in this forum or at doom9.org.
About a proggy that eventually will convert from image based to text based , well they exist but every1 of them needs OCR.
I am not sure I understand what U 're trying to say...

.sub covers a wide number of formats. Your .subs are .idx /sub probably, which aren't supported by subtitle workshop for example, and will return this exact error. I don't know what format scenarist needs, but you should have a look at the vosub to.sup to.son guide somewhere up in the stickies. to convert a vobsub subtitle to a text based subtitle, use subresync(part of vobsub) or subrip, i don't think any other app takes them.

@niamh: as stated in the first posting, this is NOT about vobsub-style .idx/.sub.
@aftertaste:
I don't have Scenarist, so you might want to consult the manual. I know that subrip offers a Scenarist ripping mode (for bmp + a timed script), so it would appear that Scenarist might accept bmps plus a script.
Regarding your questions:
1. again, I have no experience on this, you might want to have a look at doom9's guide to identifying/handling forced subtitles
2. You could try subrip.
3. No need for sth. separate, rip your vobs without any stream processing, subrip works off the vobs.
