View Full Version : Weird problem with GK and Xvid

I'm encoding a movie and everything is fine on the encode until frame 17761 when all of a sudden huge blocks enter the picture on every frame :
http://members.lycos.co.uk/smalltimerippers/frame17760.jpghttp://members.lycos.co.uk/smalltimerippers/frame17761.jpg
the frame before is fine, every frame after is corrupted :(

I'm pretty sure my GK is working OK as I had encoded 2 movies previously with NO problems at all, the movie I'm trying to encode plays fine from the vobs on the HD, what is causing this??

Are you sure you didn't forget to remove the "set credits start" from previous movie? :D

PC_Arcade
12th August 2004, 15:09
Positive, I didn't even have it set before :(

Which codec are you using, and which release? What are your codec settings?

This is likely not a GK problem, but more likely a problem produced by the codec. Even so, posting your GK logfile may help diagnose it.

I didn't see anything obvious in the log other than:
a relatively low bits per pixel value
no compressibility test
I'm using build koepi xvid 050604I assume this is the 1.0.1 build ("XviD-1.0.1-05062004 _Final Release_"). What were your codec settings?

PC_Arcade
12th August 2004, 17:33
XviD-1.0.1-05062004.exe from http://www.koepi.org/

The weird thing is, I had done a compressibility test
Thanks for the help so far though, keep it coming ;)

Codec settings were pretty much default, turbo was on however as was trellis, could it be either of those?

niamh
12th August 2004, 17:38
I think jggimi wants to know what Xvid settings you used, that's set in options, Xvid first pass and second pass buttons :D

PC_Arcade
12th August 2004, 17:56
Motion search prescision 6
VHQ mode 1
use chroma and turbo ticked

frame drop ration = 0
max i frame interval = 300

Min I frame quantiser 1
max I frame quantiser 31
min p 1
max p 31
min b 1
max b 31
trellis quantisation

Does that help?

I don't know, since I'm no XviD expert. If you look at the "Bug reporting" sticky in the XviD forum (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24924), you'll see that a lot of information needs to be gathered, such as y;our decoding filter (XviD, ffdshow, etc.), a test of the GK AviSynth script to ensure that the problem you are seeing is not a script filter, and the like.

PC_Arcade
12th August 2004, 18:18
What version & date of XviD are you using? (i.e. Mine, Koepi's, uManiac's, etc)

As above

What DShow filter are using to decode it? (i.e. are using the one with no post-processing, mine or ffdshow) [/quote

Koepis Xvid : as above
Does the bug occur with every encode you do or just the one clip?

Just this one DVD

Your computer config. (i.e. Media Players, Hardware (specifically: graphics card, Operating System, CPU) )

Windows XP sp 2, 2600+ 1Gb ram, radeon 9800. Using Bsplayer to playback and Gordian Knot 0.32 to encode

Please post all your options you using in your encode (i.e. 2pass, GMC, Q-Pel, Bitrate, VHQ, etc)

As above, no GMC, no Q-pel

If using AviSynth, post a summary of your script and check that it plays and looks fine in VirtualDub before posting.
n/a
Please try to fit a very brief summary of your problem into the subject line (rather than just having a subject of "help!" or similar)

As above

Please specify the container format you are encoding to/playing from.

There was a known bug with Trellis that was apparently fixed at release 1.0.1:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76974&perpage=20&highlight=trellis%20bug&pagenumber=3

I'm moving this to the XviD forum, where someone with more XviD knowledge might be more readily available.

And you may want to run the GK generated .avs script (if you still have it) through VdubMod to make sure these blocks are not in the source.

PC_Arcade
12th August 2004, 18:54
OK, i'll try that now.
Those blocks appear when I open the .avs as well although thet're not there on the .vob files  , I've never come across that before, what does it mean?
However, the blocks are only in the source for 8 frames, as you can see from the sample, the effect in the encode lasts alot longer.

There is an encoding error on the dvd at frame 17761 as can be seen here :
http://members.lycos.co.uk/smalltimerippers/DVD17761.jpg

PC_Arcade
12th August 2004, 19:07
I've added a ~4mb sample (http://members.lycos.co.uk/smalltimerippers/Pitproblemsample.avi) so you can see the effect.

Trahald

some one else had an issue with blocks and newest dgdecode. what version of gk are you using (didnt notice version in log.) .. specifically i was wandering if your using dgdecode 12a. that could be a factor if the vobs are not exibiting the blocking but the avs is.

PC_Arcade
13th August 2004, 08:22
I'm using GK 0.32 with dgencode 1.0.12, but I don't think that's it either, I was using GK28.8 with dvd2avi previously with exactly the same results :(

PC_Arcade
13th August 2004, 09:48
I don't think it's an xvid problem either as Divx did exactly the same thing :(

Trahald
13th August 2004, 14:34
Hmm.. well that narrows down the search area.. if the vobs look good (what did you test them with btw?) and the codec has been ruled out.. then it would seem its in the dvd2avi/avs/mpeg2dec area that needs to be examined. (remember that g-knot coordinates other tools that do the actual encoding so to solve the issue we must see which of the tools is causing the issue) . can you make available a small part of the source vob around where the issue is happening for testing? (make sure you still get the error with the sample before posting it)

I just opened the vobs in vdubmod to see if they were ok, they weren't totally, but they were alot better than the resultant .avi, I'll try and get a small .vob sample online later :)

Downloaded your sample a few hours ago.
I must recall from my memory, cos I deleted it after viewing.
Did you try to crop the original a little bit more into the video?
As far as I could see there are strange short black borders at the top
of the movie changing from scene to scene.
Just try to cut a little more into the movie and make sure your resolution is dividable through either 32 or 16.(On GKnot's resolution tab).
Maybe its a good idea to post your avisynth script for further investigation.
To me it looks like it's the source which causes the malfunction of the encoders.

Cheers

The sample was 576x432, which is Mod 64 x Mod 16, an acceptable size.

those weird black bars are matting errors present on the original DVD.
