View Full Version : problem with chapters after joining 2 dvds

i'm very new to ifoedit, but it seemed to be the most straight forward way to join a movie split over 2 dvds (or so i thought!)

i wanted to put my LOTR:FOTR SEE (2 dvds) onto 1 dvd so used this method.....
1. extract the main move vobs off both dvds
2. rename the vobs to VTS_01_001.VOB, VTS_01_002.VOB, etc.
3. open VTS_01_001.VOB with vobedit and select join clips
4. saved in a new folder as VTS_01_1.VOB leaving the first vob id at 1
5. start ifoedit - click create ifos button - open VTS_01_1.VOB
6. set the default languages for VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_1.IFO
7. clicked get vts sectors and yes to process all ifo files

so far, so good - i have a working dvd with both dvds now merged as one (even if it is 8.5GB).

now for the problem.....
at the point where both dvds join i have a chapter 33 which is 0.12 seconds long. when playing the dvd, from a folder on my hdd, on a software dvd player once the movie has passed chapter 33 the chapter number reverts to 1 and i can't use the previous chapter button to skip back through the movie. the chapters then count up again upto chapter 22 - the end of the movie.

what i would like to happen is to have 55 chapters where i can use prev and next chapter buttons to skip either backwards or forwards though the whole movie.

can someone suggest a way round this? or recommend a guide to help me solve the chapter problem?

thanks in advance.

cheers,
dave.

I dont remeber exactly but I think I solved that when reencoding Shindlers List by merging the to-1File-ripped-VOB from each disk and then proceeding IfoUpdate. This finally gave me the needed IFO etc. files and ChapterExtractor worked as it should do.

EDIT: I see you are not talking about re-encoding but this anyway should make the software-player be able to find the chapters.

thanks for the info, but not really what i'm after.

what i realy want to know is how to delete the 0.12 second chapter, leave all the other chapters untouched and keep the prev/next chapter commands (i think!)
the chapters look like this.....
- Chapter 31 starts at 01:36:08:07
- Chapter 32 starts at 01:37:43:03
- Chpater 33 starts at 01:45:29:05 <-- delete this chapter
- Chapter 34 starts at 01:45:29:17 <-- or delete this chapter
- Chapter 35 starts at 01:46:40:11
- Chapter 36 starts at 01:48:19:15
i assume i can do this with ifoedit - i just don't know how to do it.
anyone?

cheers,
dave.

Load your VTS in IfoEdit, then go to PTT_SRPT table, and right-click on the chapter (PTT) you want to delete (PTT 33).
However, this will NOT remove the video cell, only the chapter entry point.
Another interesting point to note: how many TTUs are listed in the PTT_SRPT table? If I understand the problem, it should be only one.

what i would like to happen is to have 55 chapters where i can use prev and next chapter buttons to skip either backwards or forwards though the whole movie. You may try to use the 'Enable Navigation Buttons' function of PgcEdit.

No idea why your chapter numbering goes back to chapter 1 after the join point... Maybe you have to fix the Cell Type flags of the offending chapter (PTT 34). Try the value 8 (Seamless Playback).
You can do this with PgcEdit, too: double-click on your title in the PGC selector pane, then locate the chapter in the Cells list, and click on the Type Flags button...

Good luck.

Anyways...

@lazy_dave

Here's my top-of-my-head method for deleting your [Ch 33] [Pg 33] [Cell 33] [V/C Id: 5/ 29]

Right now, according to your IFOs,if you stripped out VOB ID 5 through VOB Extras in IFOedit right now, you would also strip out the others cells highlighted in RED below. You don't want to do that.

VTS overview:

PGC_1 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 1] [03:27:19.20 / 25 fps] (Programs: 56) (Cells: 56)
[Ch 01] [Pg 01] [Cell 01] [V/C Id: 1/ 1] : time: 00:07:17.23 / 25 fps
[Ch 02] [Pg 02] [Cell 02] [V/C Id: 1/ 2] : time: 00:02:51.16 / 25 fps
[Ch 03] [Pg 03] [Cell 03] [V/C Id: 1/ 3] : time: 00:04:50.21 / 25 fps

Here's my game plan.
______________________________
Changing the VOB/Cell ID

1. Open VIDChanger (http://www.iespana.es/jsoto/).
______________________________
2. In Input IFO section, browse to your VTS_01_0.IFO.
______________________________
3. For the other sections, do as follows.
MODE: Single Cell Mode
Cell List: VID:05 CID:29
New Vob and Cell Ids: 10/1
______________________________
4. Click Process! When done, check your Chap 33's ID with IfoEdit to see your change. Chap 33 should now be changed VOB/Cell ID: 10/1. If so, proceed on.
______________________________
Removing Chapter 33

5. Click on VOB Extras button
______________________________
6. Check only these in "Options". Keep the VOB EXPERTS options as they are.
X Strip VobID's
X Correct Vob-Unit (Navigation Pack) pointers in VOB-files
X Correct original IFO files
X Create new IFO files (Movie only)
______________________________
7. Browse to your Destination directory and press OK.
______________________________
8. Check all VOB-IDs except VobId 10 then click on "Strip it" button
______________________________
9. In your target directory, open new VTS_01_0.IFO
______________________________
10. Click on Get VTS Sectors and OK to everything.
______________________________
11. Play to test
______________________________
I can't be sure right now but I'm hoping that all your STC Discontinuity flags in your cells were cleared.

If you decide to try this out, let me know how it turns out.

BTW, I noticed you kept your subtitles but your Subpicture Color Lookup Table (CLUT) in your new IFO is still at zeroes. You may want to read here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=283424#post283424) to fix that. ;)

2COOL - i'm back again to squeeze some more knowledge from that grey matter of yours.....

after the success with FOTR i decided to do the same with TTT fully expecting the same problems when joining the dvds - i wasn't disapointed!

question 1 : some clarification
this time the vob id's look like this.....
[Ch 32] [Pg 32] [Cell 32] [V/C Id: 5/15] : time 00:02:24.09 / 25 fps
[Ch 33] [Pg 33] [Cell 33] [V/C Id: 5/16] : time 00:02:39.13 / 25 fps
[Ch 34] [Pg 34] [Cell 34] [V/C Id: 6/16] : time 00:05:06.14 / 25 fps
[Ch 35] [Pg 35] [Cell 35] [V/C Id: 7/ 1] : time 00:00:00.12 / 25 fps
[Ch 36] [Pg 36] [Cell 36] [V/C Id: 8/ 1] : time 00:00:41.17 / 25 fps
[Ch 37] [Pg 37] [Cell 37] [V/C Id: 8/ 2] : time 00:02:22.04 / 25 fps
[Ch 38] [Pg 38] [Cell 38] [V/C Id: 8/ 3] : time 00:04:53.24 / 25 fps
.....if i understand correctly, this time i don't need to use VidChanger and i can delete 7/1 using ifoedit/vob extras button checking all vob id's except 7?

question 2 : the movie stops short!
when playing the joined dvd on a software dvd player the movie stops after VTS_01_8.VOB even though there is a VTS_01_9.VOB with another 6 mins of movie in it.
any ideas how this can be fixed?

cheers,
dave.

ps.
i can e-mail the VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO in IFOs.rar if it'll help

Check in Explorer for the total size for your VOBs. That would explain your play stoppage.

any ideas how this can be fixed?Since I don't see any filenames out of DVD Specs and if it was me, I would use DVD Rebuilder or DVD Shrink to shrink it down to size.

This is great! I never thought of using VIDChanger for this particular purpose when I asked jsoto for the single cell mode of operation. I would always rip with DVD Decrypter in IFO mode and deselect the unwanted cells, but this requires me to know/remember to this up front, otherwise I end up ripping twice.

The other method I could've proposed with VidChanger was to select Full VOB Process mode and Fixed cell ID instead. It takes a little longer but all cells will have its own VOBID at the end. ;) So, using it with lazy_dave's DVD, he would've got V/C IDs : 1/1, 2/1, 3/1,...56/1.

True, but if I am removing cells of a movie, it would surely be a movie-only backup (just the way I operate - always want to keep the best video possible so I always remove everything I can before compressing the video).

i'm back after a 3 month absence of needing assistance joining a lotr movie ;)
now i have a problem with rotk!

....and i'm getting an error from dvdrebuilder when i'm compressing.
i *think* this is because of the VTS_01_10.VOB and VTS_01_11.VOB (filenames out of dvd specs?) as this is approx the point when i get the error.
(i've never seen more than VTS_01_9.VOB when joining dvds before so i don't know how to get round this)

can anyone shed any light on this and offer a solution?

thanks,
dave.

Yes, you cannot have more than 9 VOB files in the title domain.
Try to compress the VOBs a little bit before joining the DVDs, to avoid the problem.

jsoto
13th December 2004, 01:59
May be if you join 9, 10 and 11 DVD-RB will work. It's out of specs, but who knows...

Use copy /b file1+file2+file3 fileoutput

and rename the output to VTS_01_9.VOB

No need to redo the IFOs

i'll give jsoto's method a go first as it'll take less time.
