Hi there,

I've been playing a little too much with a bunch of codecs and codec packs (Divx, XVid, etc..) without knowing too much about them.

I ran into troubble when DVDs and simple mpeg clips would not run at all and freeze the system. I am now at a point where I want to remove all codecs from the system, which I think I managed, but some still remain after the unsinstall procedure.

I re-installed Direct X 9, windows media player, PowerDVD, latest video card drivers etc... still crashes (total freeze after 1 frame).

How do I remove all codecs and reset everything back to "normal".

thanks

Marty

As an update...

I was running omega drivers for ATI based on catalyst 4.7

On my vendor's notebook forum (A Sager 8890V) they mentionned to stay with drivers based on catalyst 4.5...which solved my problem of playback. :D

But my question stills stands, how can I clean my computer of all codecs that I installed ?

What's the best way of installing codecs, I'm using the codec pack from doom9's download page.

the best way of installing codecs is downloading them from their original site. that way your sure to always have the latest version.

also dont install stuff you dont need. you are probably not gonna encode with 3ivx, DivX 5.2, VP6.2, XviD and DivX 3.11 all at the same time ;). I'm not installing all of these would cause problems, but as a general rule: install only those codecs you are actually gonna use to encode... for decoding install ffdshow, it should cover most of it.

Thanks

I tought ffdshow was a replacement for the computers that couldn't run the "pure" codecs because of processing power, like Xvid: ffdshow will do Xvid instead of the real Xvid codec but at a lesser quality (I tought)...so for quality I installed the real Xvid...but thanks, I might stick to ffdshow then.

nono, (aside from post processing) if decoders dont contain any bugs, they all should give exactly the same picture.
