Last weekend I´ve made some tests using a VHS source (NTSC) recorded in a simple JVC VHS-C recorder.
I´ve seen until now 2 times this problem and I´ll try to explain one of them.
The problem was a video like this...

This video is the result of playing a VHS Tape in a VCR SVHS.

but, if it plays on a simple VCR (VHS), then everything is OK. See below:
http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/alexandre_lancas/Composite_Effect_OK.jpg

When the same Tape is showing a clip without this "White Effect" everything is fine, even in a SVHS video.

I´ve tested with diferent devices and softwares:
Capture cards: DV500 DVD, PCTV
Video Input: S-video, Composite
VCR: LG (VHS), JVC2911, JVC3911 and JVC9911
Softwares: DScaler, IUvcr, Adobe Premiere.

The only way to stabilize this video was using a TBC included in JVC 9911.

All of these tests were made in 2 diferent computers.

Oh, I forgot!
In all situations, a TV was connected during tests and video was perfect!

Someone had some experiences with that ?

Yes this is normal. Tapes made in VHS-C format are always sub-standard. I have a JVC-9900 I see the same thing on certain tapes. Thats why the T.B.C. is so important.

Do you know why my poor VCR VHS is able to avoid this situation ?

Your JVC 9901 is what is a called a Prosummer type meaning that it approches broadcast standards. I have a JVC-BR-S611U which is a broadcast deck ($5400.00), and it will not except video unless it is up to standards. This is true for broadcast monitors too.

With home VCRs, they are made to cope with a mix of sub-standard video signals. I know, it seems it should be just the other away around. Again in your situation, it is the substandard way the VHS-C tape is wrapped around the recording head in a C-format recorder.

A VHS-C tape can never compare with a VHS standard SP recording. Also home VHS machines vary somewhat from the true standard. The SP speed is the only format that has a reasonble interchangeablity, not so with LP/EP or SLP.

Many times recording made on the slower speed are impossible to playback correctly on newer sub $100.00 machine.

Your 9001 is the best machine out there, but it won't be around very much longer.

@rfmars

I'm a bit puzzled. I always assumed VHS-C used the same tape as standard VHS, and that only the housing was different, and that most of the problems with them stem from tape transport problems caused by the adapter needed to play them in normal VHS decks (especially cheap ones)

But there are more differences than that? (No critique by the way, just interested )

Yes the internal loading is different so the camcoder can be as compact as possible. The tape is the same, but there are other small departure from spec. The problem you see is not limited to VHS-C but is more edvident in that format
