Hey guys,
as the subject suggests, I wonder about some things using Gordian Knot 0.28.8 with XviD 1.0.1.
Encoding movies with DivX 5.11 isn't a problem at all, but when I choose the XviD Codec, I cannot perform a compressability check, and encoding a Movie interrupts with an error message.
I read in the guides, that XviD 1.0 isn't currently supported by GK, but the date of that post is rather old. Can I do a compressabilty check manually?
How do I use GK to encode my movie with XviD?
I'd like to compare the same movie encoded with each Codec seperatly, because I have the feeling, that DivX makes the movie a little bit unsharpen. Perhaps XviD is more "crispy".
Thanks in advance

0.28.8 supports Xvid 1.0
What error message are you getting? can you post your log?

Hi niamh,
When I try do perform a compressabilty check with XviD, immediatly the message: "Failed to get data for use 'use_bvop'" pops up.
Unfortunatly I didn't save the log file, as I tried to encode with different settings, I always delete these files. But I'll do another encoding, with these options:
[x] Use chroma motion
[ ] Global Motion Compensation (this I checked before)
[x] DX50 B-VOP compatibility
[ ] Packed bitstream (also checked in the try before)
should I check Quarterpel?
Okay, next encoding job is running...

[x] DX50 B-VOP compatibility
Isn't that in the old XviD? I don't recall ever seeing it in 1.0...Am I going nuts?
Quarterpel is hit or miss, it can give excellent results, or put crawlies all over the place. You have to try it, and every source is different ...personally I like it in good new clean sources, I think it amazing in those cases...all a matter of taste.
You could try autoGK too for a start, unless you're a control freak :D, that would save you from deciding what's what and how's how.

I installed the GK 1.7 Codec Pack, so it should be the new XviD.
And the error occured again:
Virtual Dub:
Video compression error: An unknown error occured (may be corrupt data). (error code -100)

@jggimi:
Okay, there has someone the same problem, but I didn't really get what to do? I loaded default settings in the XviD encoding options and deleted GK registry keys, but it doesn't help.
Perhaps I should do a complete uninstall and reinstall all components. Because I cannot discover the version of the installed XviD in its option tabs. Only thing I found in the releasenotes.txt:
XviD-1.0.1-05062004 _Final Release_
But who knows? Murphys law is everywhere

Okay, that was really strange...
There where 2 XviD entrys in the Windows software list, I uninstalled both, reinstalled XviD from the newest GK Codec pack and the Codec option tab now looks quite different.
Now, let me try again...
Yes, niamh, you're not going nuts :D It was still the old XviD Codec, but I don't know why...
Compressability check is working now, and I think the encoding will work too.
Thank all of you very much for your help!
