Subtitles on RJ1500 (or standalone)

Does anybody have any idea what sort of subtitles I need to provide to a standalone player like the RJ1500 (or maybe others) for them to be readable?

I do not want to force subtitles or burn them into the movie - I want them to be selectable. Can I use Vobsub?

you need to make then as .srt subs and the subs file need to have same name as the avi file
