i have all kinds of tv shows in mpeg format, and was wondering how to get them into the correct format for a dvd. it's nice to watch them on tv instead of pc monitor. lol

Welcome to the forum:
Go to the Guides (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm) page and see if something on there doesn't suit your needs. The "DVD Basics" is a must read for everyone, too.

If, the mpg is a mpeg 1 with the correct framerate for your area you could load it directly into tmpg DvdAuthor and author your dvd. Dvdauthur wil change the audio to 48,000 for you. If the mpg is Svcd you could use dvdpatcher to change the size until after authoring and then size it back, but this only works if your dvd player can play svcd. Other than that, you will need to re-encode and in that case......the guides (http://www.doom9.org) including...avi and all that junk are just what the doctor ordered.

Somewhere within "that junk" is where your MPEG files lie.
Download and install GSpot (http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/11/2/7/11-2-7-12.shtml). Load one of your files. In the lower-left of the gui, click the "Render" button. In the "Video Src Type" textbox, your file will be identified.
MPEG-1=VCD
MPEG-2=DVD/SVCD
MPEG-4=Divx (usually)
After you've done that, truckle on back to the Guides page and select one that works for you. Here's (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=77367&highlight=gspot) an old thread with some discussion on file type recognition that may be of some help, and again, I stress that you get into the DVD Basics page and do some reading. You'll have a hard time getting around in the conversion world until you get a little better grasp on this junk.
With the proper combination of hardware components, it's also possible to view your captured files on your television, but this is another story. Run a search on "video out" and see what you come up with! :)
I see that Mr. Echooff has supplied you with some help while I was working on this, but since I've got several minutes invested, I'll go ahead and post. Have fun, and keep your hands away from your hair and your hammer away from your workstation!

i don't like doing video out. too much work, when it'd be easier for me to burn it to disc. AND . . . . i could watch it at other people's places on disc too. (my one buddy has a big screen :D )

The easiest way (for you) to make dvd compliant files might be with Tmpgenc's DVD Source Creator link (http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tds.html). Give it a try, free trial.
.
Many apps will do this, just need to find one you like.
