I don't think the player is available yet so that is why no one has experience with it. It probably uses the new sigma designs HD chip so maybe it can play MPEG2 and WM9 HDTV files as well (that is what the sigma HD chip supports). There are a lot of players that were announced that use the Sigma HD chip but so far none have come to market. Maybe Sigma is having problems with the chip as a few players were supposed to be out by now.

Me and a friend were thinking of going in on ordering one. 300$ bucks is alot but if it does what its supposed to then it would be too cool. I didn't know if anyone knew if this player was supposed to be capable of upscaling dvds and divx to 1080i? And was wondering if it corrected avi's aspect ratio between a 4:3 display and a 16:9 display.
Oh well, just going to have to order it and hope buy.com gets it shipped and that they have good return policy just in case:D .

I do not suggest to buy now. Simple question: where is the HD (1080i/720p) content? Only digital broadcasting using HD and no way to copy to disc. WMV HD only got 20 titles and do not produce anymore. If you got one, you may find very limited titles to play. I think most of time it would be still used for SD playback.
The only two I can image is HD home-video shot by very few new HD dv-cam, or the computer-generated anmie source. Will any body rip DVD to HD format? God bless him/her.
For the future HD will really come, yes, but does Kiss or Sigma gaurantee the player can play future format like HD-DVD or anyother eles?

I agree but it's still tempting to test drive something (if buy.com has it's return policy solid  ), and right now (assuming kiss's player upconverts to 1080i) other players like the Zenith DVB318 (upconverts but doesn't include divx support) and the Momitsu are still priced 200$ plus. I was hoping to really put my dtv and current dvd and xvid collection through a temporary upgrade from the 480p land we've been stuck in. The 802.11g and hd format stuff is just about enough to make me curious but I know the smart money says to wait. Thanks for the replys...

Actually you can get HD content to a disc by capturing the HD streams from digital broadcasting.

And if the kiss is capable of HD I probably would at least dabble in upsizing.

This player is most definitly not available yet, and wont be for a while.
It will have a DVI interface of some kind.
It will also play HDWMV content.
It will have a network connection for streaming.
Thats all we know for now.

Have Kiss given a reason why?

The chip is still only available in samples, mass production of the chip isnt schedualed to q4 this year. Oh and kiss/sigma dont have any firmware written for the player yet either.
My guess would be at least 6 months.

So it's down to Sigma then!
I'm not surprised that they've taken the tack of hyping a chip-set that's not fully available yet. However I am surprised that it's taking so long to finalise the chip-set...
Correct me if I'm wrong but haven't Sigma been advertising it's merits since before Christmas... ie: eight months ago... I wonder what the hell is taking Sigma so long?

Really? What does "some kind" mean I wonder? RGB via SCART ? :D

Here is the official reply we got from Kiss about this
Thank you for your interest in KiSS Technology A/S.
The DP-600 series will have either HDMI or DVI, so the answer is yes. The versions which have HDMI will have an adapter for DVI.
Hopefully this will get over the issue of vga output not being able to produce an upscaled picture above dvd resolution.

for the player which was supposed to be out long time (well, not their fault though) they are not really sure which specs its gonna have? not really professional of them...

According to this report (http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=ifa05) the KiSS DP-600 and DP-608 players will be available for public viewing at IFA in Berlin, from September 2nd until September 7th 2005
Sadly, KiSS are still very guarded at releasing specifications or photo's of their new players.... So if anybody gets a chance to look at them, don't forget to take some snaps - especially around the back of the units ;)
Proposed Release Dates (again)
Over on AVS, a forum member going by the name of MorganB recently emailed KiSS and got the following reply: -Unfortunately, the player was delayed as per this week. The final launch will be mid/end October. We are sorry for the delay, but the player will be so unique that we will not launch it before it has passed our hard quality control.
So there you go.....

will it do avc?

Not in hardware.... Unless KiSS have done a deal with Sigma and got hold of their EM8622L (or one of their other AVC capable) chip-sets before everyone else!

Not in hardware.... Unless KiSS have done a deal with Sigma and got hold of their EM8622L (or one of their other AVC capable) chip-sets before everyone else!hm i dont get it
if i look at the chips available from sigma than i dont see one which handles vc-1, but not h.264
and also every high definition chip supports vc-1 AND h.264
so either you take HD + VC-1 + H.264 or SD ASP only
or is there another non-sigma chip which does HD ASP and VC-1 but no H.264?

When I contacted Keith Jack at Sigma about MPEG-4 AVC support in their chip-sets, here's what he said: - RE: Sigma's chip-sets and Mpeg4/AVC (H.264)
The EM8620L does not support VC-1 and H.264.
The EM8622L and EM8624L chips are new versions that do support it. EM8622L is pin compatible with EM8620L to enable manufacturers to quickly shift to the new chip.

hm ic and the EM8620L handles HD?
edit:
btw this doesnt fit with what you said here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84003), cause you write that asp + vc-1 is supported, but h.264 isnt mentioned?
or is there also a chip which handles vc-1 but not h.264?
i am asking because i wonder whether players using this vc-1 only chip could also support avc, but dont want to

Sigma's EM8620L chip-set "officially" supports high-def WMV9 video at pixel frame sizes up to 1440x1080 (including 16:9 anamorphic) and high-def MPEG-4 SP/ASP at pixel frame sizes up to 1280x720 (although 1920x1080/88 is known to work also).
As far as high-def VC-1 is concerned, at about the same time Sigma announced the development of its SMP8630 chip-set (and subsequently its EM8622L and EM8624L chip-sets) they began to talk about high-def WMV9 and VC-1 as being two totally unrelated formats
To make matters worse, the entire issue of being able to spin Micro$oft's WMV9 HD disc format in high-def stand-alone players was thrown into disarray, when early adopters discovered their players could not process WMA Pro (6Ch) audio, because their devices were not fitted with 6Ch analogue audio outputs :o
So currently yes... if the chip-set supports HD VC-1 it will also support HD AVC.
I hope that makes things a little clearer?

I am sure firmware is long in development as the new SDK for the 8620 will also work with 8622. If they havent started on development then good luck seeing the unit before Feb next year.

I'm of the same opinion...
According to some posts made by Keith Jack (over on AVS), the EM8622L and EM8624L chip-sets are still quite a way away ;)
Hopefully Sigma will have remedied the early issues of their EM8620L chip-set before inflicting us with new ones....
Cheers
