This might sound stupid but is there a way to convert Interlaced DVD-movie to Progressive while encoding it? So that backup DVD-movie is Progressive while original is Interlaced? What problems it cause if it's possible? Any benefits?

It is possible. Most of the guides here (http://www.doom9.org) explain how. You just need to decide what method you want to use. In ntsc land interlaced looks better on tv and progressive better on a computer monitor. How you intend to view it should determine what you do.
