Currently I am taking the .srt subtitle file I have, using SRT2SUP to convert them, and then using IFOEdit to author the DVD. This method works quite well for getting subtitles to appear on my DVD backups, however, the subtitles themselves aren't very good looking. They are in no way horrible, but the AA just seems to make it look jerky. Is there anyway to make them look nicer? Thanks for your help

Yes there is.
Get Subtitle workshop 2.51 version
Convert srt to ssa, then import ssa into maestrosbt do the proper stylechanges font size colors etc position of subtitles, then press generate, once done, use son2vobsub, once conversion is done, use subtosup. Subtitles will be very much nicer than with SRT2SUP
I would not recommend SRT2SUP at all, except supremap from the same author.
After authoring in ifoedit, in powerdvd i see only below subtitles black line, (i dont know how to remove it either maestrosbt creates it or ifo edit, but then ifo edit authored dvd i insert into DVD2SVCD(option: dvd2dvd) in preview i position subs as i want and that black line is gone.
If u know who generates that black line below subs feel free to post.
Hope this helps!

To remove the black line, in MaestroSBT under Rendering, check the bottom left check box entitled "Don't Clip bitmaps"
