How to selectively delete subs with SubResync ??

Hi,

I have a DVD (Kill Bill actually) that I'm trying to convert to DivX with just those subtitles (in English) that are spoken in Japanese. There is only one english subtitle stream and when analyzed in VOB SubResync there are no "forced" subtitles as I had hoped. It seems the only thing to would be to go through and selectively edit the stream. The Doom9 VOB guide (for forced subtitles) indicates that you can select out individual subtitle texts by "marking" them and then saving as a separate file. Does this refer to the green dot, down arrow or up arrow on right clicking ? Which ever one I choose, the saved new file (with Render checked)is just the same as the unedited. Could someone just explain how to do this as its driving me up the wall.

PS - I know an alternative is to convert to a SubStation Alpha file and delete the unwanted text (events), all of which I tried, but then I found that I couldnt convert back to VOB for use in Gordian Knot. I tried using "Subtitler" filter with Virtual Dub instead but then got an error saying that the subtitle y axis was too small. Aaaaaagh

well you can convert back to vobsub idx/sub , at least from srt, and ssa to srt conversion takes ½ a second . I can't remember if it applies to ssa directly, but give it a go:

If you don't mind having softsubs, then you can mux directly with avimux, or to an output container like ogm or mkv.
I know kill bill is a hassle, I remember several threads about it, maybe a search might return easier methods.

PS: I realize the direct question wasn't answered, the reason being,
I've never done it, and I have no idea :D

I would prefer not to have to convert to SSA in the first place and want to "burn" the subs onto the DivX file, rather than mux, so that they will come through on my standalone DivX-DVD player. If I could just understand how to mark and selectively save subtitle texts in SubResync I think I would be set.

Its strange that the texts I want to select are all in italics which makes me wonder if they are actually some kind of forced sub which is somehow not being flagged in SubResync. I tried editing the "forced subs" command from "off" to "on" in the text file though, and they didnt come through as forced subs.

I assume you read doom9's guide on dealing with forced subs at http://www.doom9.org/?forcedsubs.htm ... it tells you how to select those subs you want to keep in subresync - simply highlight them (use ctrl-click for multi-selection) and hit save. Manually editing the .idx file (remove those entries you want to get rid of) might/should have a similar effect. Also, check for separate (sometimes "nameless") sub streams which might contain isolated forced subs only.

About green dots, arrows & other weird thingies in subresync: Two new waypoint types. You have to right click the green circle image next to the timestamps to cycle between them. The pointing direction means that the entries behind are unaffected by the changes.(from the subresync readme file). This affects syncing only.

Great thanks, I've got it now. The easiest (and only) way to do it was to mark the subs I wanted to keep with a green dot (right click), then highlight them (Ctrl-Click) and save as a new file. I couldnt find anything to flag them as forced subs, but the fact that they were all in italics made it easier. Cheers again.

Actually, thanks very much for the link for methods for converting ssa files back to VobSub(idx), as I found that the font of the original idx stream came out a bit too flat on the DivX encode. So I converted to ssa, changed the font, converted to son using MaestroSTB and then back to idx using Son2VSub. The subtitles now look much better than the original.
