Is it possible to mux botha WMA Pro multichannel track AND a DD 5.1 track with WMV9 in the same container and author it correctly? I know that it seems like a strange request, but I was just wondering if anyone has actually done it successfully and I figured this would be the place to ask. :)

The reason I would like to know is because Microsoft has indicated that this is not possible, but I am wondering if they are correct or if it is due to the usage of their own DRM.

Here is their statement from John Green, WMV-HD project manager:

The main problem is in creating and playing back a file which contains both a WMA Pro and a DD stream. Unfortunately, the architecture for doing this, selecting the appropriate stream, and having the player and sound card do the right things -- all while maintaining sync -- isn't quite there. WMA Pro works because with WMP9 we're assured of an audio experience for the consumer -- this is something that we cannot guarantee with DD.

To me that Quote says that it's not possible to have WMA (Windows Media Audio) and DD in the same container at the same time. It states that audio stream switching is the problem. However it says nothing at all about situation in which DD is the only audio stream available.

The WMEncoder you download from MS has some tools with it, something like Stream Editor or something, did you try those? You can reach them from start menu under the same folder as WMEncoder.

You wouldn't have a problem mixing the two in Matroska. And you might not in a WM container if you have a decent player. I'm quite sure it would be broken in WMP9.

Yes you can put just about anything in Matroska. The problem often equates to getting it out. Microsoft has a nasty habbit of checking that their video decoders only decode video if it is in their container. Ala MSMPEGv2&3 translation to Divx 3.11. So it is not that it can't be done. Just that the Microsoft filters will not allow you to do it at this point.

What will they let you do today? (TM) ;)
