Hey,
I'm using Gordian Knot 0.31 and for some reason im getting really bad compression rates.

Using Divx 5.1.1 the compressability check for a 1hr 50min movie with mp3 audio comes up as 15.9% with a resolution of 640 x 352. Xvid being worse than that. Also each time i do a compressablity check the rate just gets worse. The calculations are correct so the filesize is as close as it can get.

Can other installed apps take over the encoding of divx and xvid? I know they can take over decoding after installing windvd 6  . The stupid thing took over and then couldn't play the files correctly, i ended up just renaming the file MP4VDEC.ax that windvd installed and now divx and xvid are decoding themselves.

Thanks in advance

pls remember that gordianknot 0.31 is still in alpha state so it might still have errors in it! i've been using it for more than a dozen rips though (all xvid) without problems!

still if you are trying to put this movie on one cd, a comp check of 15% is not totally unrealistic. there's a couple of movies that just compress notoriously bad!
try fitting it on 2 CDs too!

some other things you can try:
- hit the 'reset' button in the lower left corner! - this resets all your settings from previous movies you've done
- check if you have some unusual setting for your 'credits start point' perhaps it is somehow set very early in the movie and therefore somehow screws up your quality!
-reinstall xvid
-reinstall gk
-try the 0.28.8 version of gk (only with divx 5.1.1 - doesn't support xvid 1.0
-try autogk
-what happens if you try to encode another DVD?

Thanks for the tips killingspree I tried all of the tips above before, except trying another DVD and the other DVD worked fine.

I knew different DVD's have different compressability but i didnt think it could be that bad.

thanks again
