Sometimes it repeats a frame and causes a jump in the video, but not always. I cant figure out whats the reason, seems to be random. Someimes it happens very often, sometimes never. But it was there with all firmware versions.
If you dont see it dont search for it ;)

You can download it here: link (ftp://zhnujm.dyndns.org/yuv.exe)
But its VERY poor. It needs Microsoft .net, crashes if you do anything unexpected and wont give you really correct YUV values, but its enough for subtitles.
Just copy the palette line from the .idx file (but without the leading "palette:") into the RGB Farbwerte box, hit the "Umrechnen" button and you will get the YUV values.
For example it will convert this:
000000, 828282, 828282, 828282, 828282, 828282, 828282, ffffff, 828282, dcdcdc, 828282, 828282, 828282, 828282, 828282, 828282
into this:
108080, 828080, 828080, 828080, 828080, 828080, 828080, eb8080, 828080, dc8080, 828080, 828080, 828080, 828080, 828080, 828080
For playback you will need:
moviename.ifo
moviename.sub
moviename.idx
moviename.avi
You can also add additional .srt files to that.

Could someone please provide a very short avi with all the subtitle files (especially the ifo) that work so that we can use as an example for creating our own or for testing when shopping for a player? Maybe off-site or hosted by doom9.org? Would be very useful for members. :)
Cheers.

It'd be nice if the tool supported drag&drop :) Also would you mind making the source, or at least the forumla that does the rgb2yuv, public? I'd like to make a python script that i can use with linux.
ps. and it actually appears all conversions were correct, just that i made a mistake and converted the subtitles twice by mistake.

For DVP720 and LX3900 I made new firmware mods:
- DIVX subtitles: non transparent, white font with black outline
- DIVX subtitles: widened subtitle area (safe action area = 90% of full screen)
- DIVX subtitles: replaced both font (Standard /CP1250/, Cyrillic /CP1251/)
- Full width file browser
- No filename extension cut
- Separate file browser font (FONT 14-15)
- Replaced OSD font
- 21 different OSD Languages
- Press & Hold OK (or PLAY) button on remote to have GOTO functionality (1x SELECT chapter/file?, 2x GOTO time)
- Press & Hold >>| button for Fast Forward (undocumented feature of original firmware)
- Press & Hold |<< button for Fast Rewind (undocumented feature of original firmware)

Hiall,
I remember that it is possible to have multiple subtitle files per avi, and I also remember there is a naming trick to that. I tried:
movie.avi
movie.eng.srt
movie.gre.srt
But that didn't show any sub at all...
(ifo/idx/sub + second .srt works though)
I know I have seen this somewhere, I searched this thread but couldn't find anything. Help, please?

Maybe what you saw was for the Pioneer DV-470 and DV-575A? With the new official firmware both can now do what you're talking about plus no need for .ifo to play .idx/.sub subtitles. I'm not sure if any of the custom firmware for Philips DVP720SA here or at http://mtz.softpedia.com/ could do the same yet.

I have used multiple subtitles with the DVP720SA on firmware V24 I believe it is, by naming them
movie.avi
movie.01.srt
movie.02.srt
And that worked. Maybe it is the length of the code after movie. that bothers him or the fact that it is non-numerical code that you used.
An argument for the latter is that the player will show the selected subtitle file when switching as: 01/02 with the latter indicating the total number of subtitle files.
Greetings and
merry christmas to all.

Thanks for this valuable Christmas gift :)
Now, my question, you've seen what mozarella has been doing with the PHI and PIO fw's, and looks like he got around subtitle stuttering (I haven't tried...but I will).
Is there any chance to implement it on you'r FW? Just dreaming...

Hiall,
back to my earlier post. Now I think I tried everything I can think of:
movie.avi movie.01.srt movie.02.srt
movie.avi movie01.srt movie02.srt
movie.avi movie.el.srt movie.en.srt
movie.avi movie_el.srt movie_en.srt
movie.avi movie.gre.srt movie.eng.srt
nothing works. Pressing subtitles I only get the not available sign in the upper left corner. idx/sub + one srt does work though (and also multiple languages in idx/sub).
This is with the mtz firmware (which is based on new age's v10, which in turn is based on philips' v33).
I remember it did work though. Just can't remember if it was with the original (probably v24), or the Philips update (v33). (I had for a week or two the philips update).

It is much less evident, almost unoticeable (shorter stutter duration), more random BUT... lines are cut in the end and not fully displayed. Also there are no trayling blocks on my Star Wars intro (present since V33 official).

Subtitles are centered white non transparent but not outlined.

Seems to be the same.
I have absolutely no idea why its visible for some people and for some not, i already thought about muxing/codec/audio/resolution and tried so many combinations. But then, its sometimes even visible with dvd subtitles...
Im really out of ideas.
Only thing i can say is that it seems that it happens with players that have centered subtitles. Seen this with the Xoro 311pro (beta firmware), Philips 720, Yamaha550 and now with a modified firmware for my elta 8883 that has centered subtitles. Before, without centered subs it was not visible.
Maybe the code for centering uses to much time ?
But that would not explain why it also happens with DVD subs and sub/idx files.

It has nothing to do with alignment I think.
I tried subs with top+left align on philips and still shuttering. And my Yamada6600 with top+center doesn't shutter. (Philips originally have bottom+center)
My opinion is that the movie plackback is stopped for a moment while the subtitle is drawn. If your movie is full with movement than it will be noticable very much. But if the movie have a lot of static scenes you won't notice it.

But its not that its always stopped. You can even rewind a scene and sometimes its smooth, sometimes not. I captured the players output so its easy to spot.
Or maybe this stopping is only visible (duplicated frame) when its in the near of a screen refresh ?
Thats would maybe explain the randomness.

Try:
http://members.netmadeira.com/carlos.santos/teste/Star.Wars.Intro.rar
Try to find randomness... I never did, I always saw stuttering at the same time/frame.
Please confirm if you see trailing block on the image letters (not on the subtitles (these blocks are present from V33 official beyond)
For me it has something to do with buffers ...

I captured the file 5 times with V33.
I can only find one subtitle that is sometimes smooth: "O IMPERIO CONTRA-ATACA", thats all.
Its also the first time i seen that there is more than 1 frame duplicated.
So its a very good test file...
I also checked with my Yamaha V34. Around half of the subtitles are smooth with this player.
Sharro@Home
9th January 2005, 14:03
Zhnujm could it be that the duplicate frame captured is in fact a stop in the original (if there is a stop wouldn't be captured as a repeated frame)?
Cause looking carefully on TV I only see stops/stutters.
I think we should exclude the custom quant matrix as a source for this problem, otherwise it would also occur without subtitles being displayed.
All the best.

Yes, of course. The movie stops and the actual frame is repeated during capturing.
Sometimes with your file even more than one frame so the movie must stop for more than 40ms.

I don't see any shuttering/stammering that were obvious with LX3900 V36.

If I'm right this fw is worth to be checked regarding subtitle/frame shuttering.

I can check this weekend only with my Yamaha (works with this firmware) but i agree its much much better than the 720 v33.
But not perfect.
Seems it is much faster at displaying subtitles.
For example, the "O diabolico Darth Vader, obcecado em encontrar o jovem Skywalker..." needs 4 frames in the 720 firmware to appear on the screen and only 2 frames with the 762 firmware.

Well, the DVP762 firmware goes perfect into the DVP720, with the
following exceptions:
1.
Upgrade filename will be DVP762.BIN after upgrade (this is easy to change)
2.
SACD is not there anymore
3.
Analog multichannel is not enabled. This is also good for the people
that are anoyed by the blue surround LED comming on all the time.
The good thing is that DivX with subtitling and MP3 is working fine.
OK, my next try was to exchange the 8032 block with the block from DVP720.
The result is now:
1.
DivX is working, but no subtitles.
2.
SACD is now working
3.
Multichannel is switched on, but I have not tested if it is realy working.
So...
What neads to be fixed is the DivX subtitling, and we will have a
better firmware for DVP720. With no DVD-Video stuttering when
subtitles are switched on.
Does anyone know how the ARM call is done for diplaying subtitles
within the DVP720? Is it any recommended doc I should read?
I think that by changing the subtitle call to ARM routine, maybe will
bring back the subtitles for DivX.

Hello!
I'll make V13 firmwares for DVP720 and LX3900 because this patch works for LX3900 also! (I risked again my player ;))
I even top aligned my subtitles (currently all philips clones have bottom-center aligned) to "increase" the display speed of subtitles. ;)
NOW we have a perfect player. I can finally sit back and enjoy.

Could you explain how you done this ? Or the position in the firmware so i can compare to the original Philips ?
I want to do the same thing with my Yamaha.
Unfortunatly i cannot use the ARM section of the 762 with my player. (funny as i can use the ARM section of the 720 and can also use the complete 762 firmware...) so i need every little improvement.

Dont think its a muxing problem, divx fusion integrates the subtitles as bitmaps in the avi file, thats a bit different as the current external text files. I think xvid is supported but the muxing program does not support qpel.

Does some of the new modified firmwares have digital out for SACD?
mosarella
30th January 2005, 21:27
Sorry, none of my versions do this.
There is some kind of copy protection sceme with SACD, and I don't know how to get around that.
I would also like to have SACD digital out. What is even more stupid is that for hybrid SACD/CD-DA, it is not possible to have digital out for the CD-DA (CD-audio) part.
If you like to disable SACD and surround decoding on the analog outputs, you can try this firmware:
DVP762_v36_for_DVP720.zip (http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=562)
See also here for some of my experimental firmwares (http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?showtopic=259)
It will make your DVP720SA behave like a DVP762, and I think you will get CD-DA digital out for hybrid disc's.
If there is requests for it, maybe I will upgrade this with the features of DVP720_LEE_V007.zip (http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=615)

Hi,
is it possible to implement a function into one of the modified firmwares for the DVP720SA to playback the stereo sound on S-VCDs via the player's digital output ?
If so, one would be able to connect the player to the a/v-receiver with just one cable instead of using a digital cable for AC3 and DTS sound on DVDs AND a simple analog cable for the stereo sound on S-VCDs.
Just my two cents...

Hello DVP720SA user,
Finally I finished my final firmware for download!
The firmware is available for both old and new servo units (shipped
with respectively v33 and v35).
What is new?
- STEREO output when multichannel is enabled
- Some people also report better CD audio quality
- Selectable standard or big font for DivX Subtitling
- Fixed DivX subtitle centering
- Heavy status icons
- Screensaver icon
And all the previous stuff:
- GOTO functionality by pressing and holding DISPLAY
- Modern file icons in the file overview
- Cool icons in the setup menu
- Standard or large font for DivX subtitles
- DivX subtitle position is lower for PAL television
- Widened DivX subtitle window for more characters
- More characters in MP3 information window
- Removed "ALBUM:" from MP3 information window
- Improved video stability during DivX subtitle
But watch your hardware!
[Note 1]
The firmware is available in two flavours:
Product types DVP720SA/00, DVP720SA/02 and DVP720SA/05 can handle
some special software and is compatible with MAD v06.
Product types DVP720SA/69, DVP720SA/75 and some DVP720SA/p00 cannot
handle this special software and need to be upgraded with MAD v05.
[Note 2]
When your player is pre-installed with v35 the player will not
automatically restart. This is because of an upgrade bug in v35 which
could also KILL your player. If upgrading succeeds the problem will
no longer occur.
Enjoy my hard work!

Alexander if you have any star wars movie with subtitles, the prelude is great to check for stuttering, don't even look at the subtitles just look at the prelude's letter going into the deep space, it's quite easy to spot the stutters.

I had not tested against DVP762 for a while, did you test PELI V37 ?
In fact after reseting to default with Peli+hts3500s risc the stammering came down to a level very close to V37.
I do believe that the stammers are directly related to subtitle size.
I'm preparing a .srt for that intro with subtitles of increasing sizes to see if I can get to a conclusion regarding the number of characters that won't cause stammering.

Isn't there anyone else who download "Prison Break", "Commander in Chief", "West Wing", "Lost" etc. ?
Final release of v2.10 FW for DVP720.

Peli's FW v. 03 is out, but there are reports that it may freeze your player, so be careful. See the softpedia-link for more info.

I've tried PeLi's fw v.2 and v.3 in Yamaha S550, for me it's the best fw of all philips/yamaha modified fws available. However, there's a problem - usually after several days of trouble-free usage the player switches itself off a few seconds after you turn it on. This error has been reported by other yamaha dvd550 users who tried dvp720 based fws but as far as I know there's no philips user who has the same problem using a fw from yamaha...
Any help how to solve this annoying bug will be appreciated.
BTW I noticed occasional freezes in v.3 too; there weren't any with v.2 fw.

forget about v03 from peli; it causes random freezes and turn-offs of the player. This peli guy might know a thing or two about customizing firmwares, but he doesn't know basic things, for example the replacing of the whole RISC instead of the replacing of the ARM Codes only, because ARM+DSP are related and work together.

Is there any difference in image-quality (mpeg2, divx, xvid etc.?) between these two firmwares?

Everyone is invited to try out Peli's latest version from here (http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?showtopic=259&st=560&gopid=24341&#entry24341) , it works flawlessly on my machine for several weeks now.

Alexander :-) You're still kicking!
My Dvp720 is still kicking but now I also got a 5960/12 to play with.
I've been searching for information about Aspect Ratio flags on any of the two as I'm considering to move to anamorphic encoding, have you tested recently these with avi files ?
Any help appreciated.
All the best,
Sharro

Just an alert here!
A 2 pass encode with didee's 6of9 to test in my standalones together with Heini's (with inter-matrix 15's replaced by 16's), results:
Philips DVP720SA/02
===Heini's Intermatrix Min 16 -> perfect play
===Didee's SixOfNive hvs -> artifacts on video (blocks)
Philips DVP5960/12
===Heini's Intermatrix Min 16 -> perfect play
===Didee's SixOfNive hvs -> perfect play
Video was 704x288 pixels Xvid 2BF, QP, PB, Chroma Optimizer, Trellis with 1593Kbps set for the second pass.
A pitty my good old DVP720SA/02 is beginning to age.
All the best,
Sharro
