I have a question : Do you loose some quality when you encode with burnt-in subs ? Isn't it harder to compress, because of the text's sharp edges or am I totallt wrong here ?
Another thing, it would be kinda cool if we could make a list of movies that are hard to encode. I have one, "Grease" (it was very grainy). I had to make it 1500 MB for 1h 40 min.... :) to get decent quality.
Take it easy....

Of course!!
Well, you answered your question partially. Differences in contrast affect compressability greatly (thus a bit related to sharp edges). That's also why you want to cut borders of DVD copies.
Besides, there's not a single reason imo to use burnt-in subs. It's far more easier to use VobSub or SubRip subtitles during playback.

Yes there is, the dratted standalones! Aside from that, it's murder to burn subs in, I agree :)

Well I use burnt-in subs because it looks nicer (the text that is) on my stand-alone DVD-player. And I don't have to mess around with extra files for subtitles....I just wondered how big a difference in quality it really is. If it's too much maybe I will have external subs instead....
