I converted some of my dvds to divx and now I want to convert those divxs to svcd for use in my home dvd player. yes I know, but quality loss isn't that bad since my initial bitrate and res where pretty high.

does anyone know the proper resizing options to use? I tried using gknot to make the avs file and in the preview it looks fine with the borders. but when I fullscreen it, there are bars on the side.

I did this before where mediaplayerclassic reported that the avs file was 480x480 but it displayed perfectly with no side bars in fullscreen.
there were top and bottom bars but those dont bother me.

I can't remember what the settings I used where, can anyone help out?

Try FitCD, it's like gordianknot for SVCD.
Set source aspect to 1:1 and destination to SVCD in FitCD.
If you don't want any black bars then do not make overscan optimization (the black bars may be hidden anyway when viewed on a TV so the black bars may actually be a good thing to decrease the bitrate needed).
