Today's news says:
While BenQ has just announced two new 16x DVD burner models with DVD+R DL capabilities (http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20040630PR200.html) (one single format and one dual format (only for single layer discs)), Panasonic released the first commercially available BluRay dual layer recorder (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=16926) in Japan.
We are going through exciting times. It's certainly science vs the Industry. Remember Sony's VTR saga? When Sony released the first home video-tape recorder, it was sued by the major Hollywood studios.
The Industry, of course, wants science for itself, and not for the people. Just as the army is presumed to possess information/technology not released to public (see Independence Day). The silver lining is that, it's probably harder for the Industry to do what the army can. Also, it may not too hard (see Coma).
I hope we win, as always. In some way or the other.
Regards.
