View Full Version : Changing From 16:9 to 4:3? AVI cropping without recompressing?

If I create an AVI or OGM file to watch on my Pocket PC, starting with a DVD and then using a program such as AutoGK, if the original DVD is wide screen format (16:9), the resulting AVI will also have that aspect ratio.

I don't mind letterbox, with the black bars at top and bottom, on a TV or computer screen. However, the PPC screen is so small that I would prefer to have the image as large as possible, and fill the whole 320x240 screen. Therefore, I would much prefer 4:3 aspect ratio for my finished product, rather than the 16:9 widescreen format of many DVDs.

Is there software that can do that simply--click a box that says something like "re-format wide screen to 4:3", and it will do that for you?

Otherwise, I know how it could be done manually in vdub or vdubmod. Look at the current height, figure out what the width should be to get the 4:3 ratio, and crop the sides evenly to get the desired width. The cropping option is part of the resize filter in Vdub.

A problem with this though--those filters are only accessible in "Full Processing Mode". You can't do it with a "Direct Stream Copy". So, to apply the cropping, you have to completely recompress the video! That would add hours more, and it's not good to do the lossy compression more than once.

As cropping just takes off some of the video from the sides, without changing the rest of the video, one would think there should be a way to do that without re-compressing. (For instance, in Vdub, one can trim footage off the beginning or end of the video and save it with "Direct Stream Copy", without recompression. But I can't see how to do that with cropping.)

Any software that can do that--crop and save an AVI or OGM, without recompressing it?

And--still interested in the first question as well--any programs that can automatically change the aspect ratio (for viewing on a computer, I know that it's completely different for TV viewing) between wide screen and 4:3?

I don't know if your player can install ffdshow or not, but ffdshow can crop on-the-fly, as it were, to make the movie full screen.

And no, nothing can crop to give you a new fullscreen movie without re-encoding.
