View Full Version : Problems with DVD created by DVD Decryptor

Hi - I have a new LG GSA-4120 burner which is performing nicely. I have been ripping with DVD Decrypter, shrinking with DVD Shrink and burning with DVDFab - I found it to be a simple way to burn when I had ripped in file mode, and DVDFab carried out the burns successfully (I had tried using Nero for buring but it failed every time using ver. 6.3.1.15).

Yesterday I ripped a single layer disc, so skipped the shrink step and went straight to DVDFab to burn - the burns were successful (but rather slow) but the discs would not play in my standalone player - I put the disc in, it read the number of tracks, but it would not start, even when I hit the play button. Yet the disc would still play on my computer.

I decided to try "shrinking" in DVD Shrink using no compression. I then burned with DVDFab. The result - successful playback on my standalone unit. I don't understand what is going on here.

I would rather avoid having to get DVD Shrink process the files if it's not actually compressing, because it does take a while to process - but if it's the only way I can get a successful disc, I'll do it. Is there something that DVD Decrypter is doing when it creates the video-Ts folder that gets altered by DVD Shrink? And if so, can this something be easily rectified without using DVD Shrink?

I hope this makes sense to someone - thanks.

If you want to copy a single-layer disc which doesn't require shrinking, just rip in iso mode and burn the iso with dvddecrypter. Works fine for me.

I'm not familiar with dvdFAB but it sounds like its not validating the video_ts folder for you and just burning whatever you tell it to.

By the way, why don't you just use dvdshrink to open the dvd(rip) and burn ?? It does all 3 operations in one ?

Thanks - good suggestions. I haven't tried doing the ISO burn with DVD-Decrypter, but it looks fairly straightforward for single layered discs.

I did give DVD Shrink a go at ripping and processing direct from disc (ie. skipped using DVD Decrypter). However, it seems that the only option for burning with DVD Shrink is to link it to Nero, and Nero has failed me consistently since I got my burner. Is there any other way DVD Shrink can burn a DVD, without using the Nero engine?

DVD Shrink handled the ripping and processing fine, and then I burnt with DVDFab. It all went fine, although I'd like to be able to specify a faster burn speed, and I don't know if or how one can do that with these programs. DVDFab doesn't give any indication of what speed it's burning at.

I just changed the title of my initial post on this thread, as I thought it was unfair of me to attribute my problem to all of these programs - it seems to be a problem with the way DVD Decrypter created the video_ts folder, because when Shrink reprocessed the files created by DVD Decrypter, the copy burnt and played fine.

Why don't you use ImgTool + DVD Decrypter? I never had problems with it.

Cheers.

ImgTool is great...but he'd have to use the version that doesn't use Nero...the latest one I have uses Nero's API.
I'm really confused as to why Nero doesn't work for you though....its god some issues I know..but I've never heard of it simply not working at ALL with someone's burner. You have the latest version I guess?

One thing you can also do with dvd shrink is use it to build an ISO for you...then you can use dvd decryptor to burn that iso...

this is for other backups, not the one you're talking about now...

There are two latest one, one for Nero API (ImgTool Burn - v1.1.5) and one for DVD Decrypter (ImgTool Classic - v0.91.3). Coujo develops both. Check it out on his homepage http://www.coujo.de/.

Cheers.

Thanks again for the suggestions - I'll try the ImgTool thing.... As for Nero, I don't know why I have had difficulties. I have actually downloaded an earlier version of Nero (6.3.0.3) which I am going to install and give a try, to see if it is the recent versions that are causing problems on my machine, or whatever. Not sute how the earlier version will go recognising my drive, which is a new LG GSA-4120.....

The described problems are no DVD Decrypter problems. I've got this problems too with some single layer discs. If you rip in file mode (also for single layer discs) you always have to call a "Get VTS Sectors" in Ifoedit. I think there is a sector offset in the original DVD mastered so the copied DVD will have the entry points at the wrong position... The described way will fix this. But the best way to copy single layer discs is always the ISO way.

Thanks CouJo,
I haven't used IfoEdit, and I'm not sure what it's for - but will look into it. And I'll make sure I make an ISO for single-layered discs in future!

I noted that ImgTool has the two versions that work with Nero and without. CouJo, have you come across issues with Nero failing where other methods succeed? Is it something that has emerged with recent updates to Nero.

From your point of view, does the Nero buring method offer any advantages?
Best regards, Bugsy

The (main) advantage of ImgTool Burn (and therefor Nero) is that it checks the ifo files before recording. So the described problems never happen if you use ImgTool Burn. But the API of Nero is something tricky. You never know if it works also in the next version Ahead releases ...

So if you know what you do ImgTool Classic/DVD Decrypter is - imho - the more "straight forward" solution. But ImgTool Burn has some nice gimmicks so you have to decide which ImgTool is the one for you.
