1.open text srt file with SRT2SUP
set background color to white
set text, outline, antialias color to blue, red or black
(the colors used by DVDMaestro)

2.select "SRT File"->"Save All as Bitmap"
save as a new srt file and lots of bmp files

3.use pic2pic convert all the bmp files from 32bpp to 16 color format. (don't change the output file names)

4.convert the new srt file to DVDMaestro format (son & spf) with Subrip

5.open *.son file with notepad. change Color and Contrast setting to desired color
(you can modify *.spf as well)

6.convert *.son to vobsub (idx+sub) format with son2vobsub

then it's done.

I think it's a good idea, but it doesn't work for me. The automation fails near the end, I think at son2vobSub. Looks like MaestroSBT gives a "did you save?" warning.. I just tried it again on another computer and if failed earlier. Now I moved it to another folder and it does the failure at son2vobSub with file not found, like before.

I've been doing antialias subs with this procedure:

1°) srt --> ssa with Subrip or SubtitleWorkshop.
2°) ssa --> son with MaestroSBT.
3°) son --> vobsub (idx/sub) with son2vobsub.
4°) SUBtoSUP

Then IfoEdit or ReJig.

Your tool could remove all but the last step.

thx for your help i updated the version 1.0.2 . I tryed it to two pc using xp and works perfectly i made some changes ... :rolleyes:
When i made this tool i wanted to do and the sups but the colors were wrong. The only method i know is sub(microdvd) to sup converter http://web.quick.cz/FKasparek/Software/DVD/DVDSupTools.htm
BUT you have to pick a different palete from that that is being used for the original subs .
For example if your dvd uses the palette 0,1,2,3 you should use the pallete 4,5,6,7 in order to get the right colors for ALL the sups (the original AND the added).

Im doing a player (arpa kolla) that analyzes and picks the right pallete using DVDSupTools but i dont have time to implement it right now .

*PS i tryed always with my tool to COPY the pallette from the original ripped idx/sub and port it to the generated vobsub and the convert it to sup but still the colors were wrong . Dont know why . :rolleyes:

hi guys!!. i done this ok. i convert my srt file to idx/sub, but how to mux 2 srt files ( 2languages ) into a one idx/sub?

i wanna to do this for some divx with spanish and english subtitles, and play it in the xbox (only plays 2 subtitles if the subs are in idx/sub format, because files will be the same name that the video file).

I think is maybe an option of son2vobsub, but only can select one *.son file...

kitsaros2000: you can force MaestroSBT to shift colors - just use loadpalette and load either dummy 4-color palette or load palette from original DVD (e.g. extracted from VobSub output)

IGM3: As the tool was primarily meant for importing to mkv, it doesn't support it... will be added as soon as I have some time.

Yusaku: your tool (son2vobsub) is great!! I had found something that may make it more perfect:

I converted a ".srt" file and got a ".idx" file & a ".sub" file as above mentioned.
Inside the ".idx" file, there didn't have a line:

# Vob/Cell ID: 1, 1 (PTS: 0)

There are 2 problems I found:
1. Using of "Subresyn" of VobSub caused VobID & CellID equal "unknown".
2. Caused my DVD Player cannot recognized the subtitle files & even the movie cannot start playing.

I don't know the meaning & function of the line. The line started with "#" seems a line for remarks or notes, however it seemed have other actual function, agree?

Therefore, if there have'nt provided any information for the use of the above line, I would like to suggest to default adding this line to the ".idx" file by using yr tools. Many Thanks !!

One thing: for the input of VobSub Language, there is a selection "cn Chinese", can I have another selection "zh Chinese" added since my DVD Player (play Divx/Mpeg4 as well) recognized "zh" as Chinese but it recognized "cn" as "unknown" and cannot display subtitles at all. Now I just input "zh" manually to the field, it works at all.

Now, inside the "idx" file we still can see:

I tried Txt2Vobsub and I think I had the same problem as rte5 had. It stopped at the last window, Son2VSub, and there was an error dialog: File not found.

As it looked like Txt2Vobsub was just a frontend to the 3-step method described by Kurtnoise13, I then tried the manual way using SubtitleWorkshop+MaestroSBT+Son2VobSub and got great result. I like the way I can position the subtitles on the left, middle, right of the screen, with auto justification, and it is very easy with the support of multiple styles in MaestroSBT.

Previously I tried a long and painful process using SubtitleCreator to convert .srt to .sup and then DVD Shrink to make a smaller DVD from the original one and then VobEdit to demultiplex video, audio, sup files from the shrunk DVD and then IfoEdit to reauthor the DVD add video, audio, the old sup files and the new sup back to the movie and then DVD Decrypter to extract all the subtitle streams and then VSRip to convert to .idx/.sub!! IfoEdit proved to be painful. I got less than 50% success rate with a full 2-hour movie. ReJig didn't work at all with big movie but worked with a short test movie.

Now I can create nice new .idx/.sub easily with MaestroSBT and Son2VobSub. The question is how to merge the new .idx/.sub to the existing .idx/.sub ripped from DVD? There are tools to split or remove subtitle streams from .idx/.sub but I have yet to find a tool that can merge two or more sets of .idx/.sub. Any ideas?

PS. There is a new tool Winsubtitler http://winsubtitler.wyxsoftware.com/ . It can create .son directly from .srt and many others but I can't find the easy way to put some subtitles on the left or right. But the tool is still new and sometimes crashes and I haven't been able to produce a working .idx/.sub from .son it created but hopefully it will improve soon.

Anyone actually tried kitsaros2000's txt2sup? it's here (http://utenti.lycos.it/trust_fm/Txt2Vobsub.html) (same site as txt2vobsub). This works great for me, no crashes or something like it. The application isn't all finished i think, but it does what it should be doing. :cool:

Tips for kitsaros2000:
- a 'stop' or 'cancel' button is always a good thing to have
- if you could, maybe have the option to have the topline or the bottomline only set to italic

i need it for my lang.
the txt2vobsub no crash if u rename divx file also be sure...2 rename the directory itself...
also there misunderstanding...with Width-X-height cause no option at the program itself...

tried searching all over the net, nothing specific was found. I tried looking at the sub+idx file format, made a small VBA which runs inside Excel could almost do the job! however, there are still little bit bugs due to unkown vob+idx file spec. If anyone can advise the file spec., I can then finished up the little program and share it here. :confused:

in the last hour I have interested so much in substitles, specially converting between formats.
usually I download a subtitle then never think about whatever format it is in, as long as I have DirectVobSub installed :)
after surfing I found that there is a lot of formats for subtitles, so I got confused, and untill this moment I cannot make my mind on a specific subtitle format to choose from and build my database of.
I found srt an easy way, but problems arise with different languages, so I need to choose the font-lnaguage each time I put a different subtitle.
with idx sub combination there is no such problem because of the bitmaps inside the sub, and I was curious about how to add different languages into one idx sub.

for pasta03 and zion302
in order for Txt2Vobsub to finish its job untill the end (srt > idx sub :)) do the following:
1-rename the srt file to something that does not contain special carachters, for certainity just name it subtilte.srt
2-put the subtitle.srt into a folder that itself and its roots does not contain special carachters, for certainity just put the file in the root of any partition :)
3-do the Txt2Vobsub as you suppose to do, pay big attention to framerate & Language, as none of you both chose the appropriate language I guess (i.e. pasta03 choose Polish if your language is polish :))
4-rename again and use the subtitle

.idx/sub format is able to hold multiple languages in a single pair of files.

if source subtiltle file are in .srt format, convert .srt to .idx/sub (each .idx/sub contains one language)

merge above .idx/sub (or other .idx/sub files already available) into a single .idx/sub, which should contain all the languages in source files.

Could be something wrong in RLE encoding in my program or some bug in MaestroSBT. If you send me some sample SSA (saved from inside maestroSBT) and the resulting VobSub I'll try to look at it.

I apologize for not posting sooner. Been away from the CPU due to travel. Upon further review it my issue seems to have more to do with getting a new computer and not setting up VideoLAN.

When I tired viewing subtitles on MPC they came out in the correct font and didn't have a black line. I'm going to be converting some more in the next day so I will be able to definatively know what the problem is.

You can also add a new language stream to an existing VobSub file (must be an unique feature).

-What is your SAP brand and model?
-What do you try to play the subtitle with (AVI file, DVD, ...)
-Did you try to play the same subtitles with a software player (MPC, KMPlayer, ...)
-How did you generate you sub/idx files. From srt/text sub or from SUP files?
-Did you try to reopen your generated subtitles with SubtitleCreator and did it open it?

- I don't remember exactly what the series number is but my SAP is a LG which support idx/sub (generated by txt2vobsub with default setting)

- I tried to play with Avi + idx/sub
- the subtitles displayed fine in computer (language names recognized)

- The idx/sub were generated from srt file

- i did not try to reopen the generated subtitles with SubCreator, but opened them with VobSubStrip (which comes with K-lite codec), however the language name was not recognized there.

I think i will try tonight (when i'm home) with what LeMoi suggested and will report if it works.

- Opening the idx/sub (the tested one contains 2 languages) and saving by SubResync (as suggested by LeMoi) doesn't help. The avi plays without subs.

But i tried opening the idx/sub with vobsubstrip again, haha, language names show well. I stripped them all and burnt again. this time the subs were recognized but only the second track (english) showed the texts, while the first track showed nothing.

Hope the info can be the input for you.

In your first message, you wrote that the language names were not recognized by VobSubStrip. In your second message, you write the contrary. Did you modify your files inbetween?

I would like to fix this bug.
What would help me is if you could send me an example of non-working file. (use PM to send me an address where you upload them like http://www.megaupload.com/ for example).

Also, as I don't have a SAP, could please tell me with which PC software you see a problem. Then, if I can reproduce the bug, I am quite sure I will be able to fix it.

[edit] I tried making a two language VobSub file using a srt file. I was able to open it (languages recognized) using Sub2Sup, subresync and VobSubStrip. If you have a problem with one of those proggies, it interests me. Also make sure you use SC 2.1b4.

I think I have found a problem with stand alone players and Subtitle Creator with VobSub support.

It is a problem with the way the .idx files are created, but very simple to fix. I have been using the SubRip/MaestroSBT/son2vobsub method to convert .srt into .idx/.sub vobsub files. As mentioned in post #43, I'd been having problems with underline artifiacts on single-line subtitles.

Today I tried out Subtitle Creator. The first two attempts I made at playing the files on my standalone, it didn't recognize there were subtitles. After reviewing the .idx file I noticed a line missing. I'm not sure why it is not in your .idx file, but prior to the beginning of the timestamps, I set mine to look like:

Notice, the line

This line was not in the .idx file as created by Subtitle Creator. I think this was also a bug I found in son2vobsub, but I manually inserted the line with a text editor.

This has been confirmed on my standalone player... without the line, no subtitles, with the line they showed up (it was single language, 1 set). Using a Philips DVP-5960... it is based on a fairly well used chipset.

This might be the same problem seen by qknet. I did not see this when I opened the .idx file in VLC Player... so it also could be a problem with standalones only. I'm also not sure why a line commented out would make such a big difference.

I don't normally create multi-language files... but I do have some to look at. I think it is needed once for every language.

This is one example from the .idx file. Notice, they use 1,2 and a different PTS. I think if you're not fooling around with anything else special it would be sufficient just to add it in once for each language.

Okay. I will probably try tommorrow. I'm not that familiar with creating multi-language .idx files (I'll probably have to search a bit). I'll end up making different sized fonts.... and see what happens.

BTW, using your tool is much easier than the previous SubRip/MaestroSBT/son2vobsub way I was creating these files previously. I've been fooling around to find the correct settings for my player.

I'll have to do more testing to see if the black underline artifact shows up as well. On VLC it did not which is promising (this showed up under VLC using the previous method). Currently I'm watching 16x9 content, so a black underline is hidden... this weekend I'll end up testing with full-screen content as well.

Thanks for the work you've done... for such a small user-base. Not sure why people don't use .idx/.sub more often, especially for stand alone's...

Creating multi-language .idx file is very easy using SubtitleCreator.

You create a sub/idx pair of file from a srt (or sub/sup...). Then using a second srt (or the same), you create again a sub/idx pair that you save to the same filename. SubtitleCreator will add the subtitle at the end of the first one thus allowing you to create a 2 language file. You can put up to 32 streams into VobSub files.

Good news!

I was able to get multi-language to work on my stand alone player using VobSub (.idx/.sub). Adding the line once at the beginning of each language stream seems to work. Please note, I didn't watch the movie all the way through... I just assumed it would work all the way through. I'm using the Philips DVP-5960.

I ended up shifting the ko language set way up and using a different font. Using SubtitleCreator will save me a bunch of time in the future handling VobSub.

I think I found another bug. I tried to name a file "episode.01" into .idx/.sub and it ended up saving as a ".01 file-type"... or it only created the .sub file without the .idx. By omitting a "." in the filename, I've been able to create 7 VobSub files from .srt with no problems.

Hello guys, I am new in working with subtitles, I hate when they are incorrect so I fix them. I used VirtualDubMod and it was perfect. But now I have a lot of files with VObSubs and VirtualDubMod can't open them. I also use mkvmerge GUI and I heard that you can rip any type of subs with him and than correct mistake in notepad. but newer mind that I couldn't figure it out. SO could you please explain to me what program to use in order to strip VobSubc and correct them. And in the end save them as any type of subs I want. Thank's for your understanding. Your Newbie :}

First of all, SubRip (SRT), Sub Station Alpha (SSA), microDVD (SUB) are text-based subtitles. That means that tou can change its content by using e.g. NotePAD.
VobSub (idx+sub) and SUP (SUP+IFO) are bitmap-based subtitle, so you cannot change its content with NotePad such as text-based do.
If you have a bitmap-based subtitle (VobSub, SUP, SON, SST, et al) you have two options to modify them.
1st Rip them to text-based by using OCR software such as SubRip, SubOCR, DVDSubEdit or Subtitle Creator. Then you get mainly a text-based SRT file which you can change and Reauthor again.
2nd Convert VOBSUB to scriptfile+bitmaps (SON is the best option) by using SubResync (part of VobSub Software). Note that you can use Subtitle Creator to convert SUP<-->VOBSUB. You can edit individually those bitmaps in PhotoShop or similar (it is important to keep bitmap structure: sizes, color depth, etc). When all changes made you can obtain a new VOBSUB by using SON2VOBSUB.
