Your link is broken, it should be http://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/220351.php. Simply saying that you are using dvd2svcd would have been the other possibility, I guess :).
The page you are talking about should look like this http://www.angelfire.com/film/smiller667/images/clipboard03.html.
How do you know that subs are not there? Did you use a software player? Did you activate the subtitle track? You might want to use ifoedit to see if the subtitle stream is present. Or did you expect "burnt-in" subs?
But all this is just guessing, pls. post your logfile.

NB: Maybe pick a more appropriate subject line for your postings in the future - this is actually not about displaying subs on an avi, but rather subs not showing up after an avi->dvd conversion.

I new the subs was not there after converting because I viewed the vobs in powerdvd. The subs worked on preview, does this not mean they shold work when conveted. I have deleted log I will try again and post log.
thanks
sorry about title!

stedhew,
what did you expect your subs to be like? Selectable DVD subtitles or burnt-in subs? If it is the former, did you select them in powerdvd?
Instead of reencoding, why not give ifoedit a try: open the vts_01_0.ifo, it will give you a list of what's in your vobs, audio, video, subs.
