I recently got a Philips DVP642 and it is great. It has played every file I have shown it, except for one.

I downloaded an AVI and it says "Codec" not supported.

I am a very VERY newbie at this and know I need to do a lot of reading. If someone can point me in the right direction where I need to go from here, I would appreciate it.

Can I upgrade the software in the player to support the codec, or do I need to re-encode the AVI so that it has the right codec? If the latter is true, which I suspect, what software is recommended for such a conversion.

Thanks for any direction at all with this, it is all very overwhelming.

Hi StrawMan..

DVP642 doesn't support Qpel and GMC so it could be these are present in the encoded video.

As for encoding applications you could go with Dr.Divx(easy) or GordianKnot(learning curve).

Search the forums/guides for anything you need to know and take your time.

Good Luck!

StrawMan,

When posting comments like "I downloaded an AVI" please be more specific!

You should know the forum rules by now... We don't help people on this forum who download movies!

Cheers

I'm sorry about that. I really am just testing out this unit and am interested in different codecs and whatnot. I am not interested in downloading movies from the internet. It would take too long anyway. Sorry for the confusion.

The AVI is a video of my friends from Albany swing dancing.

Dr Divx did the trick. Thanks for the info on the interesting program. I will try GK next. I have used auto gk before, just playing around. It seemed to make gk a bit easier.
