I demuxed a couple of .mpg files with DVD-Lab. When it was done, I got an error:
Cause: Bad header or unknown error
This file doesn't seem to be MPEG audio
Check if it is not a wrongly named ac3...
Searching for an answer led me to a post that said "Use TMPGEnc". I was able to use TMPGEnc to get my two files, but... why? Why can't DVD-Lab demux properly?

Scenarist for example can't demux at all. This is not a job for an authoring program. The source material must be prepared as elementary streams before authoring.

But DVD-Lab *does* claim to be able to demux... if it couldn't, why would it have the option?

There is a lot of claims commercial companies make in order to increase the sales (not specifically DVD-lab). Sometimes the advertised functionality no as good as consumers would expect.
But at least you found the practical advice: use TMPGEnc.

9 out of 10 times it will, sometimes you'll run across this problem.
.
It's usually the sign of a bad mpeg or bad encoding.
.
I like to think it's a warning of things to come.

.
Use tmpgenc or mpeg-vcr.:D
Or better - demux with PVAstrumento as it gives a report on dropped frames etc.
