Hi there.

I am using the big3 method to create backups of my movies and I have noticed that almost all my original DVDs have Volume IDs which are less or at most equal to 11 characters. So I was wondering, if I backup my movies using more than 11 characters as Volume ID, would I be facing compatibility issues with standalone players ? (I have burnt several backups with more than 11 characters Volume ID which play flawlessly with PowerDVD on my PC, however I have no standalone players to check their compatibility with the disk...) Should I be worried about compatibility of those disks ?

I am using ImgTool classic and DVD Decrypter to burn the movie BTW.

Thanks in advance.

You're save if you use up too 32 characters for VolumeID. There is no compatibility issue with more than 11 chars.

The Nero API only allows 16 chars but this is just a bug. But since you use ImgTool Classic there is no problem at all.

Greets, CouJo!

Nice to hear that. Thanks a lot for making it clear.

That's not a bug at all.

Nero uses, for whatever b0rked reason, Joliet instead of ISO-9660:1999, and Joliet is indeed limited to 16 chars.

Even though I successfully burned a lot of DVD-Video discs with Nero, maybe Joliet would cause problems on some players?

Joliet is the second layer, and unless the player wants to read it, it wont see it. It's the same for DOS, it wont read joliet but you can still read your files in your old 386 with a cd-rom.

Just for information, Nero 5.5 can use more than 16 chars.

I have 5.5.10.56 and it works with my Pioneer A07, without
any flaws.

When I raplaced my A06 with A07, I just had to wait for Ahead
software to update Nero to support new recorder. And they did it
in version 5.5.10.56.
